In the fabled hanging gardens of the Summer Palace of the Earth Court, Endymion lay with his head in Kunzite's lap. He smiled dreamily at the blue sky, wishing that the moon was still up. It was such a beautiful world... No wonder Serenity came from it. No girl on Earth could have such finely pale skin as the lunar peoples did. He wished she would come down to Earth someday, so that he might see her again. Twice in a lifetime was not enough.

"Part of our agreement on taking your lessons outdoors was that you would actually do your lessons, Endymion," Kunzite chided. His gloved hand touched Endymion's shoulder. "I know you're thinking of her again."

He blinked up at the older man. "How did you know?"

Kunzite smiled down at him, the expression as warm and fond as when he had knocked Endymion across the room with a shield slam. "You're watching the direction the moon rises from."

Endymion frowned. "I'm not supposed to be that obvious. A good prince should not wear his heart on his sleeve for anyone unscrupulous to manipulate."

The older man chuckled and patted his hair. "At least you're taking some ideas from your statesmancraft lessons. Now summarize the current situation on Jupiter's moons."

"Do I have to, Kunzite? It's too beautiful for focussing on that mess."

Gloved fingers rumpled his hair. "It will be in your hands someday, Endymion. While I, and the others, have done everything to prepare you for the day you ascend to the throne of the most powerful planet in the solar system, you must take in what we give to you."

He sighed and nodded, feeling the scratch of Kunzite's pants against his cheek. "I know, I know. I know my duty lies in understanding my people and in protecting them. I know that I have to be aware of everything else happening in the solar system." His voice cracked. "I even know that a marriage alliance between Earth and the Moon would be too much of a threat to the other planets."

Kunzite nodded, his hand still on Endymion's hair. "That it would."

"Kunzite, could you-"

"No," His general cut him off before he could even ask for help. "I would do anything for you, Endymion, but I do not think this is in your best interest. I would be working against you to help you see the Moon Princess again."

Endymion looked away from the older man. He couldn't bring himself to beg, not when he knew the answer would still be no. It was unseemly for a prince to beg. "As you say, Kunzite."

He let the subject drop and turned his eyes to the endless blue sky once more. If only he could bring Kunzite around to his way of thinking. If only Serenity wasn't so impossibly out of reach.

Maybe if he closed his eyes, he could imagine it was her hand stroking his hair.
