I mentioned that I'd read the prequel, but I don't think that covers all of the characters that the main volumes do. But if I squint, I can see this applying to some of the Saiyuki characters as well.

I sometimes read outside of canons I'm familiar with if I like the writing. Sometimes that's enough to entice me into a fandom.
