I'm not too fond of the HSUS, but they're right on this one. You can't be fond of animals if you condone, encourage and even pay for torturing them from air planes before killing them painfully.

My problems with the HSUS stem from the shelter system. The HSUS has the popular dictation on how it should be run in this country, yet it doesn't own, run or house a single animal shelter. The HSUS has dropped the ball countless times on improving our shelter system by discouraging things like low cost or free spay/neuter clinics, TNR for feral and stray cats, better adoption policies and so on, but feels that no kill is impossible and even cruel, and that killing stray and feral cats is the better choice, which leads to more animals being killed for lack of space reasons in shelters, as well as the obvious of killing perfectly healthy animals ( ... )

Oh yes-- I've seen the Winograd book mentioned on the MAGDRL e-mail list. Thanks very much for taking the time to write all this. I posted this HSUS endorsement on the Ext-MAGDRL list as well. Hope I don't get flamed! :)
