Inter-Household Aggression

[Actually, the title of this entry should be "Inner-Household Aggression." "Inter" would describe what happened to Rufus last month, I guess, at the teeth of the neighbor's pitbull.]

I am attempting to consult a trainer. A dog trainer, that is. Below is an e-mail I wrote to Pat Miller, noted trainer and author.  (And FYI:  Pat Miller's review of Read more... )

When I first got Nikki I had to take away ALL the toys. I also had to feed and water them separately locked in their kennels. Nikki was so greedy and aggressive she would start fighting with Elfin if Elfin so much as looked at a toy or the food bowls. It took a couple of months before she felt settled enough, and sure that there would be enough food, before I could free feed them again. I gave them most of the toys back, but Elfin won't play with them when Nikki is around. They still have disagreements sometimes. They got into a huge fight over broccoli stalks of all things!

wow- thanks for the info. it's encouraging to me to think that things can improve. feed and water them separately--woah. i am feeding them separately in kennels, but water doesn't seem to be an issue.

i may not see pat miller after all. it looks as though you pretty much have to go to her, rather than having her come to you. and others, mostly from magdrl.org, have been telling me that it's better to have a trainer come to your house, because often "problem" dogs will become "angels" when they go to a new site. some of the magdrl people have said the other people on sabine's list in her email to me are people they've worked with and would recommend.

i daresay i think things are better already. more on this soon. has something to do with nilif, maybe? but how would it work so quickly? still may go to a session with a behaviorist. right now am looking into, ahem, "the coventry school for dogs." http://www.thecoventryschool.com
