You don't want to see PS2 games on an HDTV. It looks like absolute crap. Your far better to keep your PS2 and standard TV for old gen gaming. PS3 doesn't have PS2 controller ports so forget about Guitar Hero or DDR.

$699 AU is around $630 USD at the current exchange rate. That is more than what you guys are paying for the 60GB version with all the extra stuff including the emotion engine chip.
It's all confusing as to why Sony has made so many different versions of the PS3 when they complained about the XBox haven't different SKU's.
Maybe it's because the PS2 here outsells the Wii at the moment as well. Maybe they're doing this to keep the PS2 sales happening...

I actually rather enjoy my PS3 and play it a lot more than our Wii; granted, I download most of my games *shrugs*. But, I wouldn't get a PS3 unless you really want one. If you're not sure you want one, DO NOT GET ONE; you don't want one and it's way too much money to spend on something you don't want :)

Our aussie dollar just hit .90 US cents today as well! That's the highest I've ever seen it, yet we're still paying $999 for a PS3 here.
