Kurama slid his hand through his red tresses. He couldn't figure out why, you of all people didn't want anything for Valentine's Day. You, who was the hopeless romantic and loved everything about love and what it brings. He just couldn't bring himself to even begin to fathom the idea.
He sighed, unsure of what to do. While he wanted to get you something, he didn't want to upset you. Kurama remember quite clearly how upset you were last year when he had got you something. You didn't yell or anything of the sort, you just turned down the gift and said give it to you another time. And sure enough when he did, you accepted it without hesitation. Sometimes he really didn't understand you. At this point, just asking you would be the best thing to do.
"[Name], do you want to do anything tomorrow?" Kurama asked.
"Hmmm? Well, not really," you replied. That was wrong. You were always enthusiastic about going out on a date. He knew how happy it made you.
"Are you busy?" Kurama asked.
"I'm hanging out with some friends," you replied.
"[Name], I know all your friends. Yuusuke and Keiko-san have a date, Kuwabara-kun and Yukina-san are going shopping, Hiei has plans with Mukuro, Maya has a "hot" date and there is no way you would choose to hang out with Kaitou-kun over me," Kurama stated.
"I have other friends," you said.
"I know you do, but they're not coming all the way here to Japan from [Country] to visit randomly in the middle of the school year when they were just here during their Christmas break," Kurama explained. "Don't bother trying to lie to me. No lie ever gets past me."
"You and your lie detector skills," you grunted.
"You don't need good lie detector skills to see when you're lying," Kurama replied with a smirk on his lips. He knew how bad you were at lying.
"Do you want to tell me the real reason why you don't want to go on a date tomorrow?" Kurama asked.
There really wasn't ay point in lying to him. He would see through every lie you would make. You honestly have no idea why you thought you could get away with lying to Kurama, of all people, after 18 years of failure.
"Because it's Valentine's Day," you said.
"And what's wrong with Valentine's Day?" Kurama asked. "It's everything you like about love."
"That is true, but even growing up I didn't really like it either," you replied.
"And whys that?" Kurama asked. Now he was getting some real progress with you. Just asking directly with your rather than guessing is so much easier. You were usually easy to predict, but you have a few instances, where you did something unpredictable, like not liking Valentine's Day.
"Growing up I thought of it as nothing, but a commercial holiday. It's there so Hallmark and Hershey can make some quick cash," you explained. "And then when I got older to me Valentine's Day became a day where you feel this need to express your love and not out of the simple reason that you love the person. And why is Valentine's Day so special? Shouldn't a person express their love for their significant other all the time and not just one day a year?"
It finally made sense to Kurama. It's not that you hated Valentine's Day, you agreed with what Valentine's Day stood for, showing your love to the one you care about, but what you didn't like was it was a one day event of the year when love should be shown throughout the year. He understood perfectly now.
"[Name] whenever I'm with you, I feel your unconditioned love that knows no bounds and it makes me very happy inside. You have no idea how madly in love I am with you. Every moment with you is special, so I understand what you mean when you talk about Valentine's Day. So how about tomorrow we forget that it's Valentine's Day, and have a date. A date just like any other, nothing extra special, just you being you, and me being me. What matters to me is us just being together," Kurama said.
"You're not just saying that?" you asked.
"Of course not. I love you [Name], and I want to be with my girlfriend tomorrow, Valentine's Day or no Valentine's Day," Kurama stated.
"Really?" you asked.
"Really," Kurama replied. You looked up to his face to see his gentle smile. You could feel the love radiating from him as you hugged him tightly as you burrowed your head into his chest, listening to his heartbeat. You felt like you could stay like this forever. In his arms, you knew that there was no place safer.
