This post is mostly the result of a lot of mistakes I made in a previous relationship, which I definitely would not make again, even at the risk of thoroughly embarrassing myself by trying to talk about sex. Then again, I was a lot younger and generally more inexperienced and insecure, so it might not be as much of an issue now.
It's great seeing young women like you realising that they have the power to make those sorts of decisions, and the communication skills, too. And in my experience, most men like to be told and don't take it in any way poorly unless, as you warn against, the communicating is done in a way that is mean or manipulative.
Well, I very much doubt that I would ever be in a position where I'd need to tell a man what I wanted, but I will definitely keep that in mind ;)
