I'm anti-abortion.

Very anti-abortion. I am so against killing the unborn that I believe birth control should be over the counter, social services for single moms should be excellent, and premarital sex shouldn't be excessively stigmatized. I want to get rid of every reason a healthy woman could ever have  to get rid of a healthy baby ( Read more... )

"They're not pro-life so much as anti-sex"

You know, we may not agree on some things, but I think you just put your finger right on it here. This is absolutely the problem! I still would rather not have the government decide for me, but I totally agree that the people who stand on street corners with blown-up pictures of aborted fetuses are using the defense of life to justify a socially conservative agenda (anti-sex, as you put it).

The pro-life movement doesn't make much sense if its goal is to prevent abortions. Everything you pointed out is true, plus abstinence-only education is resoundingly poor at actually reducing pregnancies.
However, if you look at it as a method of social control, it all of a sudden makes sense:
Birth control is instrumental in advancing women's rights, because birth control allows you to delay pregnancy, go to college, and have a career. Which in turn allows economic and social independence. Without birth control, its pregnant and married early.
So viewed as a way to advance a "traditional" way of life, keeping people scared of sex, women out of the workforce, fewer divorces (via economic dependency), &c, the pro-life movement makes sense.

Here here!! I have my views on abortion, they stem from many reasons, but I don't view abortion as a form of birth control. There are pills, condoms, shots, whatever, but for some girls its VERY hard to even get a chance to use them because of family, social stigmas, or whatever.

Educate our kids about what sex really is, about the REAL risks that are involved, explain not having sex, but tell them what they are really in for if they decide to have sex. I am not saying get out there witha video full of sexual positions, but tell them the damn truth (age appropriate of course) so they know the REAL risks involved.

I could keep going but I'll stop.

Excellent points, Spore! I'm with ya.
