Gankyuu Eguriko has been alive for 1000 years. This is because she has the secret to immortality-an apple! Not a metaphorical apple or anything, an actual apple inside her. Actually, she has two, but it wasn’t always that way.
The story is commonly known-Adam and Eve, and the forbidden fruit. The fruit is rumored to have been filled with all sorts of good things, like complete strength, immortality, knowledge, ect. God gave Adam and Eve all the paradise they could want-plenty of healthy food, beautiful scenery, and a lovely place to live-and he gave them all of this with only one repercussion, that they could not eat from the forbidden fruit

When the story starts, you actually see Gankyuu as a villainous character. She approaches Rinnie, the main heroine, with a spoon in her hand, and proceeds to gouge her eye out.
Nice, right?
But there’s a reason she did this-and not because she’s evil or wanted to kill her or anything. Ultimately, eternal life is a burden laced with suffering and pain around every corner. Gankyuu didn’t want that for Rinnie. She knew that Rinnie had come into contact with an apple, but she wasn’t sure if it had rooted yet. So she thought there might still be time to save the girl from eternal damnation. Gankyuu could take on the burden of killing Rinnie, to save her from eternal life

Gankyuu’s chief motivator in life is her fear of loneliness, but also her acceptance that she will never be anything except for alone. She pushes people away because she can’t grow close to them. Because she doesn’t have any right to make friends, since she deserves to suffer. She threatens people because she’s ultimately scared to grow close to them-she’s afraid of a the broken heart she’ll receive once they leave her

Sacrifice is a huge part of Guriko's personality. She's the kind of girl who believes in happiness for all people, even if she is required to suffer. She has long since sacrificed her body and soul to saving people with apples, as well as innocent bystanders, and she believes this to be perfectly A-okay. Why have tons of people live and suffer forever, when she could take the burden of living off their shoulders?
It's plain to say that Guriko, even though she's over one thousand years old, is still very much a child at heart. Despite her... slightly gorey way of life, Guriko simply believes in happiness for all humans-and strictly believes this is a definite possibility. Some (most?) would claim this is a very ignorant thing to believe in, and truth be told... it probably is. But after being so exposed to all the harsh cruelties of life, and still be able to look for the good in people? Guriko definitely has a lot of faith in people-especially the ones that call her ignorant

All of Gankyuu’s abilities are because of two factors. One, her apples, and two, her age.
** Gankyuu actually makes a note that the longer you’ve had an apple-rather, how ripe the apple is-the stronger the apple will make you. So there are two factors of strength when considering that apples, one being how many apples are inside of you, and two being how long they have been there.
So Gankyuu currently has two apples, one that has been in her for 1000 years, and one that has been there for a few months.
Gankyuu used to have two other apples in her, but she implanted them into her two comrades when they were on the verge of death. It’s not known how long those apples were in her, nor if the “ripeness” of the apple traveled into the people she implanted them in, or if it restarted in the transfer between people.
" According to an ancient Greek legend, the figure of a crab was placed in the nighttime sky by the goddess Hera to form the constellation Cancer. Hera swore to kill Heracles, the most famous Greek hero. Hera attempted to kill Heracles in many different ways, but each time his incredible physical strength allowed him to survive. Hera cast a spell of madness on Heracles, causing him to commit a great crime. In order to be forgiven, he had to perform twelve difficult tasks. One of these tasks was destroying the terrible nine-headed water-serpent, Hydra.
During the battle between Heracles and Hydra, the goddess Hera sent a crab to aid the serpent. But Heracles, being so strong, killed the crab by smashing its shell with his foot. As a reward for its service, Hera placed the crab's image in the night sky."
