Goodbye
“Will!”
He stopped when he heard his name. Obviously, he hadn’t been expecting anyone to notice him creeping through the town towards the dock. And why would he? It was well past midnight, and no one of respectable character was out.
But Elizabeth had been waiting for him.
Will turned, dropping the bag he had slung over his shoulder to the ground, and looked at Elizabeth with regret.
“I’m sorry” he said, and she knew he meant it. “I can’t stay here; not now. I have to go.”
Go after him…
He didn’t say it, but it echoed in Elizabeth’s mind all the same. She wished that there was something she could say or do to change his mind, but deep down she knew that Will wouldn’t - couldn’t - be happy with her now.
“I know.” She said mournfully. She forced a smile. “I just didn’t want you to leave without saying goodbye.”
At that, he enveloped her tightly in his arms. “I will miss you” he whispered.
Elizabeth had loved Will since she was 12 years old, and she had promised the day they met to watch over him. Now, her heart ached at the thought of letting him go. And she worried for him.
“What will you do if…” It certainly wasn’t jealousy that prompted her to ask. “If he doesn’t…” She was only looking out for Will’s best interests, that was all.
“Doesn’t want me?” Will finished, pulling away to look at her. “I can fight. Jack said himself that pirate is in my blood. I’ll do whatever it takes to prove myself worthy of his crew.”
Elizabeth shook her head. “No, I meant…”
Will interrupted. “I know.” He sighed and let go of Elizabeth, picking up his bag as he collected his thoughts. “I don’t think I truly drew breath until I fought with Jack in Mr. Brown’s shop.” The smile Will gave as he stared out behind her was the most free and truthful expression that Elizabeth had ever seen on him and it was then that she understood what he meant. “He showed me what my life could be. He showed me what I could be.” Will was speaking to Elizabeth, but his mind was miles away, as thought he was really speaking to something within himself. “Before, I was only… waiting. Now I know what I was waiting for. I was waiting for someone to come along and… force me to see who I really was. Jack did that without even trying, just by being himself and showing me what I was missing.” His eyes focused on Elizabeth once more. “I wish I could say that it was you, you don’t know how badly I wish that I could love you the way you’ve always loved me.” Elizabeth closed her eyes against the tears she felt threatening to fall. Her heart felt like it was plunging into her stomach. “I do love you, Elizabeth. I always have. You’re my dearest and closest friend. But…”
She couldn’t bare to hear the rest. “I know.” She said, pressing her finger to Will’s lips. “Go.”
He nodded, and after a goodbye kiss on her cheek, he was gone.
For some time, Elizabeth stared out into the night. She was surprised that it hurt less to have Will gone than to have him standing in front of her but so far out of reach. Will, on the other hand, needed Jack in his life so badly that he was willing to take the risk of such overwhelming pain and sorrow. Jack would have to be a damned fool if didn’t appreciate how lucky he was to have Will’s heart. Elizabeth was consoled somewhat by the realization that, whatever he presented himself as, Jack Sparrow was no fool.
