Meta - Search For Spock

Ok, so after my TMP Essay, some people wanted to see another one, so I decided to write something for Search for Spock. Unfortunately, I used up all my serious with the TMP essay, so you’ll just have to settle for my humorous scene-by-scene description of this one. Still, either way, it should be fun.

For starters, let me just point out the premise ( Read more... )

I’m… almost tempted to call this a remake of Sleeping Beauty. Almost.

OMG! THIS!!!

I'm completely loving the way your mind works here...

Right? If someone was to describe the events of the movie, leaving out all the Star Trek stuff and the fact that they're both men, anyone listening to the description would so think that this was a romantic story!

I cannot argue with your logic.

You know, I saw that movie in the theater when it came out. Maybe that's where I got these slash goggles.

Free slash goggles with every ticket, heh! I wish I could've seen it at the the theater, but unfortunately it came out before I was born.

The thing is with this movie (and lots of other TOS/movies) you DON'T NEED slash goggles. I'm as fond of mine for other shows/movies as anyone, but here they really are NOT NECESSARY!!!

My parents took me to see the late show for this one in theater. I think it was the first ST film i'd been able to see at age 7 on the big screen. I have to say my love of them was there before this movie, but they were familiar characters cause i remember watching TOS with my mom long before that. I remember dozing in the car afterwards but i was wide awake for the entire film. I didn't have my slash goggles then, but it was very, very evident that they were loyal unto and beyond death as a friendship.

Now that i'm grown? EGADS the slash. SO MARRIED. ^_^

It's not just Sleeping Beauty, it's Orpheus. Only, Kirk wins and actually gets to keep "Eurydice" because he didn't look back, not once. He went ahead with Sarek's crazy plan without knowing whether or not he even believed it, as he told Morrow.

I was blown away by this movie the first time I saw it. I was just dumbstruck at how much more explicit everything was. And I loved it!!!!

We love a lot of the same things about this story, you and I. The part about all the children gone -- no, emptier than that -- yeah, totally.

Also: "If there's even a chance Spock has an immortal soul, then it's my responsibility-- as surely as if it were my very own!" It reminds me of things I've read in Christian marriage literature about how husband and wife are responsible for each other's souls. I know that's not what they meant, but still. In what other situation are you ever responsible for someone else's soul??

I'm not familiar with that story, but from what you say, Spock's line to Morrow makes more sense. Oh God, I'm starting to think that this was done on purpose!

And that last bit - yes! Just friends do not take responsibility for each other's souls. At least not with any level of seriousness. They just don't.

Orpheus is a Greek myth that's been inspirational to stories in many cultures since those times. Basically, his wife was bit by a snake and died, and he went down to the Underworld and got her back, but the deal was, he had to trust that she was behind him following him out--if he turned around to make sure, she'd have to go back.

Kirk never turns around.

Actually, that does sound familiar. I think I maybe have heard that, a long time ago...

Aww, Kirk has total faith in Spock, always, above all else <3 "If Mr Spock says that he needed the tools, and that they would have been returned by morning, then you can bet your reputation on that, Miss Keeler"

I think I read somewhere that there was a deleted scene or a book or something where David and Saavik flirted... or maybe they even were starting a relationship? I think you were on target with your analysis there. And of course David/Saavik would be like a het version of K/S.

The scene with Sarek when Kirk has to relive Spock's death is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the movie. People say Shatner can't act, but he sure can when it counts. And it counted there. I really just wanted to hug Jim in that scene, or conjure Spock out of thin air. He just looked so damn SAD! :(

I really like your Sleeping Beauty parallel ;) I've heard before that this also parallels the Orpheus/Eurydice story, only THIS Orpheus gets his Eurydice back from hell. (Didn't Genesis go up in flames right before K&S beamed up?)

Off to read part 2.

I did think that, like they're the SfS version of Decker/Ilia. But the thing is, Spock & Kirk behave like 100 times more romantically towards each other than Saavik & David, they don't even need a het version. David and Saavik don't behave like they have anything more than a professional relationship.

Absolutely he can act! It's only when he was giving those ludicrous moralistic speeches that he did that pause-in-all-the-wrong-places-thing. He's perfect in all the movies though. And yeah, that scene, and the close up on his eye... *sigh*

I'm not familiar with the Orpheus/Eurydice story, but now I'm thinking maybe I should look it up.
