Title: An Important Conversation Between Spock and Uhura
Fandom: NuTrek (My first NuTrek fic!)
Pairings: Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Spock
Rating: G
Summary: “I have something important that I must discuss with you”
Warnings: slash, het, a little angst
A/Ns: I wanted Spock & Uhura to break up, but I didn’t want it to be disrespectful to either character, and I really didn’t want any drama to be between them, because I like their friendship. Also, I wanted Uhura to SING! So, I wrote this. It is my hope that something along these lines is implied to have happened between this movie and the sequel which is inevitable.
“…At first his look could hypnotize
And then his touch would barbarize
His alien love could victimize…”
A sound from behind the door interrupted Nyota’s absentminded singing. “Come in.” she called. She smiled when Spock entered the room, but her smile slowly faded when she saw the troubled look in his eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“Nyota, I…” He looked down at his shoes, but his posture was otherwise rigid, with his hands clasped behind his back. “I have something important that I must discuss with you, but I am uncertain as to how best to proceed.” He finally glanced up at her.
Nyota closed the distance between them and put her hand on Spock’s cheek. “What is it?” she asked gently.
Spock took her hand in his, removing it from his face but still holding it. “Nyota, I… you mean a great deal to me. I care about you very deeply. The time that we have spent together…”
Nyota jerked her hand away, leaving Spock momentarily startled and confused. After a brief pause, he was about to continue, but she put her hand on his lips to stop him. “In every language, every culture I’ve studied, the preface to a break up is always the same. Always.” She removed her hand, hoping that Spock would say that she had it all wrong, that he was going to say something else. He didn’t. She slowly allowed her hand to drop, and now it was her turn to look at her shoes. “We were never really together, were we?” she asked sadly. She was glad when he didn’t give her an answer. “Two and a half years we were together, and you never once tried to get me into bed. Even now we have separate quarters. You’ve never really shared… anything of yourself with me, your culture. I never really knew you, did I?”
She looked back up at Spock, who at least seemed to know enough about humans not to answer that either. “It is my sincere wish that we remain close friends. I have a high level of respect for you and your abilities, both in terms of your work and our shared passion for music. I have enjoyed your company throughout the time that I have known you.”
Nyota swallowed her sadness and forced a smile. “Me too.” Spock turned to leave, and Nyota called after him. “Spock wait.” He stopped and turned. She really didn’t want to say what she was about to say, but she knew that she would feel worse later if she didn’t say it. “The right girl for you is still out there, I know it.” Spock raised an eyebrow. “I just… I don’t want you to give up on relationships, on love.”
Spock… smiled, just a little bit. “Although I disagree with your choice of words, I concur with your sentiment; the right person for me is out there, as is the right person for you.”
Nyota processed this, and then realized what Spock was saying. “Oh.” It was strange that it actually made her feel better. Like less of a personal rejection. “Then I guess… the right guy is out there… for both of us.”
“Indeed.” He agreed with a tilt of his head.
Nyota chuckled as she went into the dining area of her quarters to get them both a drink. “Just as long as it’s not Captain Kirk, that guy is bad news!”
It was a good thing that Nyota didn’t catch the look on Spock’s face at the mention of Jim Kirk. Spock quickly decided that this was yet another thing that it would be unwise to divulge.
