PC Hardware Questions

Nov 03, 2007 11:15

This morning I got it in my head to uninstall a few programs I never use and free up a bit more space for, yes, I'll admit it, Sims 2. This was going well enough, and I'm never fool enough to uninstall anything I don't remember installing--I figure if it came with the computer (and isn't clearly AOL crap), I'm probably safest just leaving it alone ( Read more... )

things that go wrong, stupid shit i do, technology, plea for help

adding a sound card is pretty simple. I am a bit far to do the install but I will gladly talk you through it.

And the add new hardware wizard in your control panel isn;t finding the card?

*nod* The big question is what kind of computer (Dell, HP, something else) and what operating system (Windows 95, XP, ME, that sort of thing).

With that we can probably figure it out.

Well, I may not have an icon of myself in some state of bearding, I can weigh in on this, too. I'm going to go with the idea that it is most likely onboard sound, unless your computer is more than 5 years old.

The easiest thing to do is download CPU-Z from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php Direct link: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-141.zip

Unzip the 4 files, run cpuz.exe and click on the 3rd tab, marked Mainboard. Let us know what the Model, Manufacturer, and/or Southbridge and we should be able to help more.

Let us see if that helps enough to get things a little more solved.

You are both funny and helpful. :)

I think this is everything you asked for, plus.

model: C51MCP51
Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce 6100
Southbridge: NVIDIA nForce 410/430 MCP
LPCIO: ITE IT8712

Does this help?

I do believe that this page should have what you need: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp32_8.26_11.09.html

If this is your motherboard, then I also believe you have onboard video (although you may have had another video card installed, too) so once you install the driver above and reboot, download this http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_163.71.html and that will bring your graphics drivers up to the most recent version, too.

Good luck!

Sadly, I'm still having the same issue. After I ran the program and installed the updated drivers the new hardware wizards still said it couldn't install the "new" hardware. :( Thank you for trying, though.

Ok, totally not the subject, but my latest obsession has been playing the Sims on my X-box. It kinda scares me sometimes how much we seem to have in common...

In a cool way.

I feel that this is an appropriate icon.

Hehe. I love this game--it's completely addictive.

Also, I had a dream last night that we were both members of some huge superhero team. Oh, and Aqualad was your older brother. I never did find out what our powers were, though.
