This morning I got it in my head to uninstall a few programs I never use and free up a bit more space for, yes, I'll admit it, Sims 2. This was going well enough, and I'm never fool enough to uninstall anything I don't remember installing--I figure if it came with the computer (and isn't clearly AOL crap), I'm probably safest just leaving it alone

The easiest thing to do is download CPU-Z from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php Direct link: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-141.zip
Unzip the 4 files, run cpuz.exe and click on the 3rd tab, marked Mainboard. Let us know what the Model, Manufacturer, and/or Southbridge and we should be able to help more.
Let us see if that helps enough to get things a little more solved.

If this is your motherboard, then I also believe you have onboard video (although you may have had another video card installed, too) so once you install the driver above and reboot, download this http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_163.71.html and that will bring your graphics drivers up to the most recent version, too.
