And now, the end is near…

Well, it’s finally happened. They cancelled Spooks. This series - series TEN, good lord - is going to be the last.

It was a Kudos rather than BBC decision, and in all honesty it probably was the right thing to do. It’ll be interesting to see what they come up with for the last series, and ( Read more... )

There is also a BBC Press release. I can post the link if you like in the comments?

And also if, once again, it’s all down to the Russians.
It's always the Russians. Someone should make the icon.

Oh, good point, I'll add that to the post - there are more spoilers in the press office link than the Guardian one.

Or end with a nuclear explosion in London on the eve of the 2012 Olympics...and then straight into a rerun of Spooks: Code 9...

I love this particularly fatalistic take. And the scheming machinations of BBC/Kudos execs to get another run out of Code 9 !

YES. I had forgotten about Code 9, that would be great.

I do wish people wouldn't say Spooks is being "axed", it's not! The show is coming to a natural conclusion.

And good gods, it's been TEN series for crying out loud. It's not as if it died after half a season like some US TV shows (or worse, after the pilot!)

Well, I agree with you, but when the Guardian's saying it in the title, I can't really blame fans for saying the same...

True, but it's almost the flip side of the quick cancellation reaction - it's been around for *so long* now, I'm not sure what I'm going to do next September when there aren't any new episodes to complain about/enjoy/obsess over.

I'm multifannish so the answer will be 'watch another show' but it'll still be *weird* not having it there.

Oh, good point!

I hadn't thought of that. Maybe we need to start watching out for Alice Krige turning up on TV shows in the future...

Very sad... and following on the heels of 'Waking The Dead' coming to an end (a full series after I thought it would, TBH) I can only hope that there are up and coming shows of similar quality to fill the gap.

To be honest, I'd suspected it was on the cards from partway through last season; Harry's continued musings about it being time to get out and just the general feeling that he'd really had enough of it all... I remember talking about it at the time with my OH and we agreed that the show shouldn't go on without Harry because he is the lynch-pin. Operatives come and go but Harry is eternal... or something.

The only question now is - will Harry go to meet his maker, or will he and Ruth go off into the sunset (and a happy retirement) together? I'd like to think the latter, but suspect it will be the former...

I think it will be interesting to see the new shows they come up with.

It did seem like it was coming to the end. I have been wondering if they've been angling for a spin off, although frankly it was a surprise that WTD managed it!

At the moment my favoured ending is the kind of giant cliffhanger they come up with occasionally - Harry (and Ruth?) in peril or something. Give the fic writers something to play with!
