From the Catholic News Service review of The Golden Compass:

"The film contains intense but bloodless fantasy violence, anti-clerical subtext, standard genre occult elements, a character born out of wedlock and a whiskey-guzzling bear."

I was just curious because, you know, the books are kind of anti-Catholic church.

Wow. I'm gonna be REALLY disappointed in the bear fight if it's bloodless. It was seriously gruesome in the book. Like seriously gruesome. Like entrails eating gruesome.

And yeah, in the book, the Pope orders the kidnapping and torture of a shit-load of poor kids. I'm not surprised the Catholic News Service didn't like it.

Yeah. This review is actually very reasonable, though, when it comes to that. It says instead of barring your children from reading them, you should just have a discussion with them. Or something.

Heaven forbid any film portray a bear drinking alcohol.

Firsts it's the bears, then it's the rabbits... Next thing you know, it's your child.
