i also love the idea of fred becoming a ghost to haunt future hogwarts students/keep george company, but i don't know if i can see it happening. nearly headless nick makes it clear to harry in OotP that sirius can't come back as a ghost because only those who have returned as ghosts feared death--and that many wizards don't choose this echo of life. i don't know if it's in fred's character to be so afraid of death that he chooses to become a print of his former life. i like to think that he's brave enough to move on to the "afterlife" where harry's parents, tonks, the marauders, etc are, where george can eventually join him. i think there's a difference between ghosts and poltergeists; the ghosts at hogwarts all have a melancholy feel to them.

I would love the idea of Fred coming back as a ghost but I don't think that is possible. Happy people don't become ghosts and I want to believe Fred was happy.
