Co-writer Orci, a lifelong "Trek" fan, always felt there was an undercurrent of attraction between Nimoy's Spock and Nichols' Uhura.

I knew one of the writers had to be a 'shipper.

BINGO! I knew somebody had to be shipping them on the writing team! (>^_^)>

I can't say how much I appreciated the fact that the film-makers had Uhura pursue the intriguing and sexy Spock over that horndog Kirk. I mean, I like Kirk and he's very charming almost despite himself, but it's hard for me to respect a female character who really falls for for someone like him when he's clearly just out for a good time with regard to women. I find it so frustrating in movies when supposedly smart women fall for these kinds of guys after seeing what they're like, simply because they're the "hero", even when it's obvious the guy is still not relationship material. It was immensely satisfying that in this case Kirk didn't get the girl, because she wasn't just "the girl," she was Uhura! And had her own wants and desires. Now Kirk can keep on bedding women across the galaxy and Uhura and Spock can have their awesome thing going on.

Plus, I was always way more into Spock than Kirk -- so it's nice to see my taste validated ;-).

Hee! I love your write up here. It's also kind of presumptive of storytellers do a disservice to heroes like Kirk and whatever woman they choose to pair them with when they try to shoe-horn romance on. It diminishes both characters by requiring the woman to be some kind of maturing force who has to do all the relationship maintenance, get storylines about jealousy over other women, etc. It also implies that a guy like Kirk can't make his own decisions and achieve his own growth as a person. It's... gross and typical and I'm glad they didn't go there.

Leonard Nimoy is very right about S/U, because they are *there* for each other and they seem to have found in each other the right person for their wants/needs/state of mind. It's kind of amazing to see them together, because they're so totally HOT LIKE FIRE and yet so very much on the same page. They're effing gorgeous.

Plus, I was always way more into Spock than Kirk -- so it's nice to see my taste validated ;-).Oh, dear heavens yes! Kirk is like... (to steal a quote from Castle) a ( ... )

Amen to all of that! (Except for shipping anyone when I was little, b/c I remember watching a Star Trek TOS marathon when I was in 7th grade and it never occurred to me to 'ship anyone.) LOL
