Pet adoption with small children?

Most of our pets have been adopted, either from shelters (1 cat as a kitten, 2 rabbits at 1 year old) or from people we knew who had to find new homes for their pets (1 cat as a 1 year old from horribly irresponsible owners, 2 cats at 8 years old from an owner moving into a retirement home).  As responsible pet owners who spay / neuter as ( Read more... )

As long as you are not adopting the pet *for* your kids and you are adopting them as a family pet or your own pet, you'll LIKELY have no issue. It's when people try to adopt FOR their children and put the responsibility on the children that we (rescuers) have an issue.

Thanks! I'm sure the kids will eventually get pets, but at 5 years old I'd think more like a betta fish, with careful supervision of the feeding, and lots of supervision and help with water changes.
