favorite fics in terms of writing style - J2, S/D, or Gen

Tell me some of your favorite stories in terms of writing style.

Maybe the characterizations aren't to your taste, or you don't like the twists and turns of the plot - but the writer's style is so good that you read (and love) the fic anyway. Whatever impresses you - voice, originality, word choice/usage, sentence structure, use of narrative ( Read more... )

It's times like this I hate my swiss-cheese memory, because I've clicked on so many stories outside my preferences because the summary was *that* interesting, and stayed because the writer's style was just so damn good. If I recall specifics, I'll let you know. I've actually had a few comments on my fics that start, "I normally would not read this type of story, but--", and it's the best feeling ever. :)

Oh, I can't remember anything - 's why I flail so much with the fic-request questions here. I *know* I've read it, but I can't unearth it in the lumber room of my mind!

So I keep a stash of fics I've loved. I'm trying to sharpen my own writing style right now, so was curious about what other readers in this comm admire. Helps sometimes, if you can find similarities - or really sharp contrasts - between someone else's style and your own.

Roque clasique - I love her writing style bad. And she has a story that is unfinished and I am not joking I would pay her sweet cash money for her to finish it. Those Who Have Crossed Over With Closed Eyes. I want to read the whole thing so bad. She's gone missing though and I believe that she's totally out of fanfic ( ... )

This is _great_, thank you so much! Some of these writers I know, but others are new to me, so I've got a good reading week ahead now, thanks to you.

Yay!!! I was pretty sure that you'd already read some of these guys but when I get to tell about my fave fanfic writers I go a little overboard I think. Ok, one last recommendation and I'll shush.... if gekizetsu is one you haven't read And Fools Shine On, the sequel If Belief Was Enough and the grand sequel Woven were the ones that made me totally dig this author. Ok, shushing.

Yes, gekizetsu was one of the first writers that I stumbled across in this fandom - what a way to begin this journey!

This is a question I'm horrible at. I "love how she writes" but I can't give you genre or style or concrete things like that. I love amypond45 and ameliacareful. I love sylsdarkplace for imaginative treatment of fairytale or fantasy elements. I love tryfanstone for her concrete place and character, her absolute firm rootedness in the reality of her story. (I would not read ponyfic by anybody else. Her ponyfic is a necessity in SPN RPS and types of BDSM education.) minchout did a kind of wistful earnestness, tipsy_kitty is good at ripping your heart out--she tells an awesome story, but you know going in half her stuff ends in irretrievable tragedy. phoenix1966 tells amazing fantasies, dense with detail and heady with atmosphere woven through her stories, and again, solid characters we don't always like, and realities that we believe in. roxymissrose can tell you a story that's full of home and kindness despite hardship, or she can rip your heart out--you just never know, going in. Are any of these writers consigned to a genre? Or to a style? I may be blind in this area but I *can't* tell you who wrote something just by ( ... )

For someone who can't give me "genre or style or concrete things," Fu, you do pretty damn well! :-D

I agree with all of these, especially the note about tryfanstone's ponyfic and the heart and hope of roxymissrose, even in the midst of an apocalypse. Thanks for the input, several things to ponder here.

agree with so many recommendations here - a couple more for you are all on AO3, and I love for many different reasons: Cleflink for wit and characterisation, Morrezela for the same reason, and leonidaslion is a legend in my book for angst and amazing stories.....hope you like :)

I do like! Magic realism, in particular, is my favorite subgenre, and cleflink is a Master of imagination there.

I really enjoy morrezela 's style. It's descriptive and bright and it reads very fast. Enough so that I even read her a/b/o fic, which I usually avoid. But she does also write Dean/Cas, so you may want to skip those.

I concur! Stopped in the middle of my fic cataloguing the other day and had myself a little morrezela fic fest. She's a great storyteller. (Did not know she wrote Dean/Cas, but I never go There.)

Oh, oops. I mixed morrezela up in my head with enigmatic_blue, who does write Dean/Cas, which is why I didn't rec her here. morrezela does not write Dean/Cas and my brain is slow after a twelve hour graveyard shift. My apologies - but go read morrezela
