It's that time of the month again, meaning: Picture post! This time we're going to talk about two very important characters in the Supernatural mythology and we can all agree that if it wasn't for them, Sam and Dean wouldn't even exist.

At the moment, my big thought about John and Mary and their relationship is based on last episode's (My Bloody Valentine) casually dropped bit of info; they initially hated one another and their epic love was purely the manipulation of the angels ( ... )

Honestly, I haven't seen that episode (FAIL! I know) so I don't really know all that new information about them but I find your point interesting. The manipulations actually were really powerful and incredibly creepy when you think about them.

I have thought a lot about that bit about Mary too. That first flashback episode made me think about Mary and the hunting life and how things could have ended up different for her, maybe she was going to get out eventually or maybe she was just going to realize that there's no way out, I don't know what to believe and it makes me sad for them but at the same time, I think that manipulations and all, they truly loved each other and the levels of devotion they showed... I don't think you can't fake that, I don't think the angels could make them believe it just because they needed them for Sam and Dean to be born, it just seems TOO MUCH and yes, that last thing you point out, I thought it was brilliant, creepy and powerful and so very well done.

I think you are right that Mary/John at the epic OTP of the show; each took crucial actions for the sake of the other one that turned fate on it's wheel and brought Sam and Dean to the point where they are now: Mary made the deal with Azazel to save John's life, and Dean vowed vengeance and gave up his life to become a hunter after Mary died. For all that Sam and Dean keep dying for each other/making sacrifices, they will never, ever match that simply because of how intricate, intimate and long-range the results of Mary and John's choices ended up being ( ... )

Exactly! They set everything in motion because they loved each other so much (deal with Azazel and revenge-driven life --> hunting life) and the weight of their choices became important not only for their family and/or friends but for the entire world, that right there is something epic ( ... )

John Winchester is also my favorite character so far. The show is Sam and Dean, sure, but for me the heart of the show has always laid with John and Mary, but specifically John. The fact that they both remain such solid characters, even while not actually being on the show week in and week out really says something. John's sort of that elephant in the room that the boys just don't talk about too often, his presence is strong.

The angels put them together, yeah, but I see it as part of their destiny. I think they loved each other, and there seemed to be a serious, intimate level of devotion. I love seeing them back in the day, and I love the interaction the boys are able to have with them, it damn near breaks my heart.

Wow, this comment! You just basically put in words my thoughts on John and Mary. I love that too, I love that no matter how little time we've had with them, they're well-constructed characters, SO important for the story this show is telling yet there are still SO MANY things we don't know about them; I just find that dichotomy fascinating.

They are epic, there's no other explanation.
