Hey, I’m
wanttobeatree, another temporary reccer for February! I’m kicking things off with a few examples of how to rock the epistolary casbah. It’s a format that I love, and I think these fics have done an awesome job of it:
SPN
That Time, With The Thing, by
schweedie (PG-13, gen.)
Dean has some stuff to say, so he decides to give modern technology a chance. Set during S3, Dean records nostalgia and snippets of big brotherly advice onto an ipod for Sam. Fantastically Dean-voiced, a little bit funny, and extremely touching.
Age of Innocence, by
sirryluv (Adult, Sam/Dean, implied underage.)
The Winchester boys keep journals. This is Dean's. Exactly what it says on the tin- it’s Deans journal from when he was a kid right up through the start of the series, crammed full of Winchestery tidbits, heartbreaking moments, and a great development of Dean’s voice over the years.
Trail Magic, by
bellatemple (Teen, gen.)
Dean hates camping. There's a very, very good reason for this. A fascinating take on how, as the author puts it, Dean gets his own ass out hell. The use of interwoven legends, interviews and diary entries is great and supereffective.
J2
Extra, Extra (Read All About It), by
sarcasticpixie (PG-13, J2.)
A network season in the lives of our two Noble Heroes, told epistolary/scrapbook-style. Cleverly done and great fun. And also a little bit prophetic, despite being written over a year and a half ago.
Bonus non-theme!
Fade To Black (Not While Your Hand’s In Mine), by
runedgirl (NC-17, Sam/Dean, Sam/demon!Dean.)
The brother that Sam gets back isn’t the same, but Sam’s love is. Sam risks everything and leaves everyone he’s ever cared about behind in the desperate hope that the bond between him and Dean might just be strong enough to transcend what hell did to him. Set aside a quiet afternoon for this one, because it’s 18 amazing chapters long and once you start reading you won’t want to stop.
