Jared was once the world knitting champion, but after a tragic accident in the 2004 Woolympics where he dislocated his thumb, his speed and coordination was never the same and he was forced to retire. He moved back to his hometown in Texas to work at his parent's yarn shop, but he swore off knitting and hasn't purled another stitch since.

Osric has just moved into town and needs a new hobby. He wants to learn how to make those knitted animal hats with ear flaps. Jared tries to fob Osric off by pointing him towards knitting pattern books but Osric keeps bringing in his sad attempts at hats and Jared just can't help telling him where he went wrong and showing him how to do it right.

Along the way Jared rediscovers his love of knitting and finds himself falling for this quirky newcomer.

It didn't take long for the money to run out. Yeah, he might have been one of the hottest names in knitting, but that still amounted to his living being cobbled together from a whole hell of a lot of freelance work- magazine articles here, teaching paid seminars there, a bit of royalties from book sales. He couldn't work, not in any meaningful way. There was a trickle of money from ad revenues on the blog but even that would dry up soon when his sponsors realized that there weren't going to be any more blog updates and there was another slow trickle of income from pattern sales on Ravelry. But that was it. There wasn't unemployment and he'd never had a chance to build a big savings cushion ( ... )

His mom gave him about a week and a half to sulk and sleep too much in his childhood bedroom before she laid down the law. In her very supportive, not too demanding way. He was nursing a hangover. Chad had taken him out again last night, to the bar where he worked and kept him topped up, just with the random cans of cheap, shitty beer they couldn't sell, but free booze was free booze, so Jared had drunk up ( ... )

An hour or so later, jeans thrown on along with the gansey that he'd knit for the 2003 Woolympics, and his greasy hair shoved under a slouchy hat he'd knit a long, long time ago, he headed down from the Orange line El stop. He walked the last few blocks to the shop's South Loop location, stopping at the Starbucks for a bit of fuel before he opened the door at Yarn-agogo, his mom's shop. His too, in a way. Emotionally at least. The shop had been her way of being supportive of his chosen career. After the divorce from Dad, then not long after that, her parents died. There'd been a little money she'd inherited along with the bungalow. She'd been at loose ends, needing to do something new. He'd been the weirdest teenager in his high school and already immersed deep in knitting. She'd been a casual, hobby knitter, still was really. But they'd moved from Texas to Chicago and she'd latched onto the idea of a knit shop as something they could do together ( ... )

The hotel/conference center had ponied up a big chunk of cash for his medical bills, even though they probably hadn't needed to, but Jared hadn't been too proud to take their 'don't sue the pants off us' money and sign their waiver ( ... )

OP again. Oh man, I really feel for Jared here, you've portrayed his depression really well.
Can I just say that I love all the detail you've put into the secondary characters? They all feel really distinct and real. (Also yarn-bombing totally sounds like something Misha would do)
I do love all the knitting details; I love reading anything about an unfamiliar subject written by someone who's passionate about it, and this fic has gotten me so interested that I've been looking up loads of things referenced in your fic, like the difference between pickers & throwers etc. :)

Urgh, I can barely wait for the next installment! This is such a great fill. Thank you again and good luck with your new knitting project!

I've only got one totes worth, but this is after a long, long stash diet, plus careful culling. But I live in a small apartment. No room for a huge stash. Jared, on the other hand, is a professional, so I figure 20 totes is totally reasonable, especially if you include fleeces and spinning supplies. I've known knitter with almost no stash and those with pretty much a yarn store in their basement.

I'm glad you're loving it. It's so much fun to write.

Somehow commented before realising you had indeed posted more. Jared's pain just jumps straight to my heart, it thrums a chord for me. It makes so much sense, his process, his grieving, his frustrations and most especially his fears. And Jensen being this hot and married and happy upbeat and intense and successful physical therapist. Just awesome. I kind love that this is going in a different pairing direction. It's fun to see this change of pace. And it feels like it makes sense in the fic. I really like that. selling his spinning wheel? Ouch. And I get it, it's not really pride that's holding him back, it's fear. He's afraid that's all he'll ever be capable of anymore, that it will never get better. As long as he doesn't do it then it's maybe not real, and there's always hope. If he tries, swallows the pride and starts at the beginning, and it doesn't improve he'd just feel shattered. All that emotion. I really feel for him ( ... )

Your kind and in depth comments mean so much!

I hope folks don't mind that I've included Jensen in the story, even though he won't be in the pairing. I know a lot of people have the J2s as their OTP, but it's been kind of nice to step out of that for a bit. But I also just adore Jensen, so I had to include him. Yes to Jared being afraid more than anything.

I'm sorry it was a little confusing. I'm just sort of making this up as I go along and not editing real well. Maybe some day I'll get over myself, clean it up and post it on AO3 or something. For now though, I'm glad you're enjoying the story.

You know that was actually something I adored that you did. So often it's either OTP or erased-from-that-universe. I just adored the fact he was in there as a normal character, no shipping but not minimized either. I thought it was natural and loved the cameo and the chance to see his character shown in a different light. So no matter what anyone else thought, I know I rather enjoyed that decision. It made me very happy.

Oh no worries. I just mentioned it for that exact reason, just in case you were ever posting it someone more editable and that sort of feedback become useful. I'm actually adoring this start to finish, so if you ever do end up posting it to somewhere like AO3, I would love to know about it so that I can add it to my bookmarks on there. I'd love to do that in fact. But no pressure. Just if it happens, it happens. Happy writing!
