Dean got his knot much earlier than most alphas. (11-14) John has been putting off 'the talk' with Dean, but Dean's curious and wants to see what it's all about. John's on a case and they're visiting Pastor Jim (or anyone) and his son Castiel when Dean gets his chance. John walks in on them when Dean's already knotted in his best friend. It would be great if Castiel was one or two years older than Dean, and if they're both innocently experimenting.

Dean's always felt really insecure about his omega status. He always assumed he'd be an alpha like his dad, but since he got his first heat, he's had to put up with leers and comments from just about everyone in the hunting community. It sucks dealing with that, but it sucks even more when John starts making Dean stay home because he says Dean's scent starts interfering with their hunts.

Sneaking out to work on a case, he meets Castiel, who is tough and badass, and the only other omega Dean's ever met who doesn't seem to fit into this stereotypical box everyone's always told Dean he's supposed to fit into.

A curse (or anything really - purgatory?) suddenly causes Castiel to disappear. Sam and Dean figure out what happened when they find a very small child, looking just like Castiel, mysteriously abandoned in their motel room. Horrified, they try everything they can think of to change his body back. Dean's just about giving up, thinking they'll just have to raise him, when he notices Castiel is aging faster than a normal human would. It takes months, rather than years for him to grow, and Castiel's memories come back the more he ages. It's up to the author when exactly they start their relationship back up.

Castiel is around Dean's age (at least 13), a child in a family of monsters (any kind would do). John kills his family, and Dean thinks he saves Castiel because he couldn't hurt a kid. He thinks this until he walks in on the real reason John kept Castiel with them.
