A medieval AU where John is the ailing king of some land, Prince Dean is his favoured son and heir to his throne, and Sam is a bastard rumoured to be born of king and witch (whereas Dean is from the womb of the beloved but deceased Queen Mary). Sam wants to prove he can make a better kingdom than his father. He wants to help the people prosper. He can stomach exiling his father or even waiting for the likely illness to take him, but Dean has been good to him when all circumstances suggested he shouldn't be. So when Sam takes over, he keeps Prince Dean in a tower where his dear half-brother is only allowed Sam's company.

It grates, of course. It grates that it's obvious to the barons that keep on attempting to legitimate his birth through the privy council but it is most assuredly not obvious to his father. His father that refuses to affix his signature and royal seal each time the document is set before him.

Of course, if John had it his way, Sam (never, ever given the noble Samuel; instead, always the common Sam) would be dead in a ditch somewhere or perhaps even exposed at birth. Sam has never been quite sure how a man so keen on his dead wife and so dead-set against any and all magic managed to get a child (a boy no less!) on a common hedgewitch ( ... )

There's a tower that he's having readied. It's part of the keep, though much fallen into disuse. It was Queen Mary's private bower, shut up after her death. Sam finds it hard to hate her as much as John: she smiles so serenely in the portrait above the throne, and in his healthier days, John would go soft at times and say that Dean reminded him so much of her. Sam and Dean would dare each other to run the twisting stairs of the tower when they were younger, though after the time Sam tripped and fell, Dean refused to play there, no matter how much Sam begged. There's a large, magicked window in the bedchamber, one that even John could not hack out: no glass, just open-air that lets in sunlight and gently perfumed air while keeping out the cold and the elements. Dean will love that, Sam knows ( ... )

This is utterly wonderful and i hope you consider writing a sequel. I admot it does stand beautifully as it is, however much I wish for more.

This is fantastic! I love all the details and the backstory you've built up and I'd love to see more if you ever felt inspired!

This is a gorgeous piece of writing. I could totally feel Sam's evil and Dean's kindness, and damn but Sammy does paint a pretty picture. I don't think I'd be able to share forever either :P

This is absolutely gorgeous. Ingenious in the hint of evil(power) vs. insanity in Sam's thoughts. I loved it more and more as I read. It had such a mystical quality to it. Those last few paragraphs left me with my mouth open in amazement. I would love to know more, but at the same time, I don't have to. You did such a marvelous job that I felt the satisfaction of an ending!
