Like, the FD discussion on genre fans getting sucked into the wrong genre. I think horror would be the most entertaining, in terms of horror fans ending up somewhere else. Not so much non-horror fans getting sucked in to horror, because that's most horror films.

Also, stripper Dean mpreg by RoboSam.

Or anything else.

Please, please, please find a way to rec it on meme when you are finished or post it in an FD-post type challenge! Because meme recs and the FD post are the only ways I hear about new fic anymore, and I want this so bad you don't even know.

I'm hoping to use it for a bang so it should appear in the FD post. :)

sa also I wouldn't call myself an Interesting Thoughts on Horror nonnie, but I know they are on meme and I'd love to hear their thoughts on that video. Apparently Santigold directed it herself,; knowing this has given me a full blown insta-crush.

Okay, I've got to ask: what exactly is SCP? I don't get that and I keep seeing it on meme.

I'm guessing it's a community based site for people to tell horror stories, with a scientific 'factual' sort of bend to it. Possibly rooted in the whole Slender Man thing.

It's a collaborative fake wiki project for a secret facility that collects and studies horrific objects and phenomena.

Unfortunately I'll have to save watching the video till another time.

I'm a nonnie who thinks I lack the horror gene. All I've read (or seen) of Stephen King does absolutely nothing for me, and SPN as supposedly horror wasn't a draw, and never scared me anyway. I've tried various well-recommended horror short story writers, and nothing.

However, a little while back I thought of making the distinction between horror and horrific, the latter being eg some of China Mielville, and that does do something for (to) me. Sounds to me like the video might be more what I see as "horrific".

Oh, Aphex Twin, though. The "Come to Daddy" clip I can recognise as horror in the usual meaning, but also has the horrific effect on me. I think that's the only one.

ayrt I don't know how you define those categories precisely but I suspect it's actually "horror." There is not much violence and none of it is realistic; the video is a brilliantly constructed metaphor.

Yes, China Mieville is horrifying to me when he writes about the Remade. Also George RR Martin is horrifying in the same way when he writes about how his human characters treat each other. I think he must have done it on purpose that the historically realistic non-supernatural medieval brutality is so much more effective as horror than the zombies are.

I don't know quite how I define them either, and can't now even remember what it was in (I assume) Perdido Street Station that made me think of that. It certainly wasn't gruesomeness or detailed violence, eg the description of what was done to whatsisname's wings. I suspect it is more something about people, or society, being utterly horrible.

That "Come to Daddy" video is seriously one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. The "Windowlicker" one is not quite as bad, but still very repellent in this "can't not look" kind of way.

SPN sould stand to get back to it's horror roots for sure, but if it were Chris Cunningham-video level horror, I'd have to stop watching.

Some of China Mieville's stuff definitely falls into that category as well. Have you read any of Bradbury's horror stuff? It's much milder than those, but does have a similar quality of bodily alienation sometimes.

Yeah, I thought Windowlicker was less successful, but I appreciated the attempt to have horror in the shiny sunny good-times setting, and the social commentary aspect.

I haven't, but will bear him in mind. Without too high an expectation, because eg Terry Dowling's fantasy and sf I love, but his horror, including the recced-by-everyone "Scaring the Train" left me lost as to the point.

sa HOLY SHIT this Youtube comment:

i also think the song incorporates the immigrant worker's perspective and how they get by relatively well in america while back home things are crazy-- "while we sleep in america our house is burning down."

OMG. I know youtube comments are always terrible, but I think that gets to me because the author is not trying to be clueless and thinks they're being really thoughtful. LOL.
