This is fabulous. I really like the slow build from a day-in-the-life thing, the tension as they wait and wait for the compressor, with the heat. And then it turns into something else, and I just ached for them. Great job with Esme, you made her likeable with very few lines, and Dean's reactions were so believable, from the "um, thanks" to his reaction to her death.

"I know you didn't kill her," Sam says finally.
It should be enough, but it's not, not right now. "Well, thanks for the vote of confidence. Took you fucking long enough to say it."

Oh, ouch. Oh, boys.

Thank you so much! I'm so happy it worked for you - I was worried about the pacing, that it was too abrupt a shift, but I wanted it to be startling, you know? And I'm glad Dean felt in character to you - I do think he'd take this kind of thing hard, especially if it was something he couldn't kill afterwards.

The heat in this feels so palpable, so suffocating, so real. You did a great job of incorporating Dean's deadline into this story, without it being overbearing, and I love your characters' voices. Poor Esma, but poor Dean who can't take a break. Love the open ending, gives the story a fantastic mood. Thanks for sharing.

Heh. Poor Esme. I'm glad you liked her - I did, too.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it.

I love the human monster making it even worse from them. That's a nice and unexpected twist in a town supposedly full of spooky energy.

Poor Dean, can't even get a break when he's trying to forget about dying for five minutes.

I'm glad that worked, because that's exactly what I was going for, how sometimes it's just people sucking, and they can't do anything about that.
