The story I'm working on right now, I would class as SciFi if it weren't fanfic, because it's kind of a dystopian future-fic. But future isn't far-future and, well, SPN is dystopian anyhow. You've said "as long as there's a Sci-Fi element" which is clear enough, but the SF element in my fic is psychic ability (as in real, measurable and known to everyone - think Babylon 5, sorta, but it's not a crossover) and I'm not sure you'd count that as SF in a Supernatural context.

That sounds sci-fi enough to me. I agree with you that in the Supernatural context some elements (like psychic ability) are less sci-fi than they could be in another context, but I'd say that we can have a wide margin about that.
I remember a short sci-fi story that was based on kids getting a test to establish their IQ at a certain age (11? 12? can't remember, just like i can't remember title or author of the story). There wasn't much of a future-tech twist at it at all, really. The twist was that if the IQ was higher than a certain government-established standard, the kids would be removed from their family and, uhm, never to be seen again, to say it nicely.
No spaceships or green little men, but still: scary sci-fi enough for me. :)
Reserving the option to love best long plotty bob-ish au's with actual stellar settings,
me too :)
There was a time in which I only read sci fiction *good times* *sighs* so, uh, yes, so much to write, so much OH WINCHESTERS! and not enough time.
No worries, I understand too well, I'm still fighting with own server/connection problems, though at least Yahoo seems to be working for now *crosses fingers*
So I commented on hossgal's post that I think the broader definition you suggest here may be more useful than a narrower one -- although I would point out that the definition you post here should allow at least some XF/SPN crossovers -- the ones that acknowledge the alien mytharc, anyway.
Oh, oh XFIles is certainly included! After all, it's half 'supernatural' and half 'omg aliens hybrids want to invade us' :)
It's hard to make it a stricter definition: at times it can be a nuance, and yet change the whole story outlook firmly into the realm of the sci-fi. I do have a preference for a clear sci-fi element, even if it's just, you know, green skin and maybe a tail (oh my, can you imagine DEAN trying to pick up an alien chick? *dies*), and I love spaceships, but you know, an SPN/Terminator crossover would work for me!
I want Winchester in Space as well, at the end, and you're right in being picky, there's nothing wrong with that, otherwise we risk ending up with a generic crossover comm, which we don't exactly need nor want, right?
Winchesters in Space is the main thing, with some leeway at the margins. That should work, hopefully :D

(it's possibly more psy-cyberpunk than techno-cyber than classic sci-fi, but still works for me :D

But having said that...
Star Wars, Star Trek, Star Gate, CJ Cherry's worlds
...you have any idea what I would do to see Winchesters on nighthorses?
gah.
Damn this job and this schooling and this real life that is interferring with writing Winchesters. There is not enough time.
(And sorry the listing is not more complete. I got started on the crossover communities and lj ate the post.)

This is why most of my long posts get written in Notepad now. *g*

Not that that's a bad thing.

For me, this is drifting away from what I was originally thrilled with about WiS - space.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the SPN/Terminator cross-overs that I saw, but SPN/TXF and SPN/Terminator aren't, you know, space.
*is picky*
*is unsure what being picky is going to get her*
*is NOT going to take her marbles and go home if no one agrees with her*
*is willing to compromise on 'sf' but really really wants more space Winchesters*
And on that note - off to write!
