The 1st Annual Crossover Ficathon Challenge

Mar 23, 2007 18:35

The spn_gaiman Crossover Ficathon Challenge is now open.

Sign Up Here.

Requirements:

Your fic should be at least one thousand (1K) words total. There is no cap on length, if you go wild and write a novella-sized story, then it’s very much welcome however a story must be complete when posted. Works in Progress are not accepted.

Unless otherwise noted in your assigned requests, spoilers for the end of Supernatural Season 2 are allowed as are any spoilers for the Gaiman book/comic you are using in your crossover (see Deadlines to see why S2 finale spoilers are allowed). A quick warning though. If you are writing an American Gods crossover, you cannot include any spoilers from the sequel novella Monarch of the Glen or any spoilers from Anansi Boys unless your assignment allows it.

Your assignment will include three different requests for you to choose from. I will make it a point of matching up requests with writers who have stated that they have read/are familiar with the desired Gaiman ‘verse crossovers.

Please note carefully what crossovers you are willing to write and what types of stories you will not write. If het makes you shudder or Wincest ain’t your thing? Please note that accordingly.

Character bashing of any kind is not allowed. Leave your “h8” at the door.

Please fill out the following:

Name/lj user name:
Email:
I can write about the following Gaiman works:
I won’t write:
Rating Limit:
I am willing to write a backup story:

For example, here is what my form would look like:

Name: Regala Electra / regala_electra
Email: regala electra at yahoo dot com
I can write about the following Gaiman works: American Gods, Anansi Boys, Monarch of the Glen (sequel to American Gods), any short stories featured in the U.S Editions of Smoke and Mirrors or Fragile Things.
[note: While I have read Neverwhere, Good Omens, Stardust, etc., I did not include those. So don’t list everything you’ve read if you don’t want to get stuck with something that you don’t feel that you’d want to write.]
I won’t write: Fluff, Deathfic, Torture, Wingfic, Bestaility, Overt Wincest (pre-Slash okay)
Rating Limit: None
I am willing to write a backup story: No

Story Requests

Please put down three requests that you’d really love to see written.

This is the format that you should use:

SPN Crossover With:
Three things that you want in the fic:
Your “Do Not Want” List (no more than 5 things):
Rating Limit:

For example, here is what I would put down for two of my requests:

SPN Crossover With: Americans Gods
Three things that you want in the fic: Loki, the boys in a holding cell, the case of a stolen bottle of soma (distilled prayers for the gods)
Your “Do Not Want” List (no more than 5 things): deathfic, wingfic, explicit Wincest, schoomp/fluff, 1st person POV
Rating Limit: R

SPN Crossover With: Anansi Boys
Three thing that you want in the fic: Bobby meets Spider (Anansi’s son), set before the events in Anansi Boys, how to con a trickster
Your “Do Not Want” List (no more than 5 things): Slash, hurt/comfort, schoomp/fluff, 1st Person POV
Rating Limit: PG-13/low-rated R

Deadlines:

Signups will be open from March 23rd and close on April 21st.
(So if you’d like to read another work by Gaiman in the next almost-month? Go right ahead.)

Assignments will go out on April 28th.

Stories will be due July 21st.
- You may post your story to your livejournal or any communities of your choosing on that day. You cannot post your story before then. Officially the deadline is 11:59pm Eastern Time (as I’m in NY and I’m dead to the world by about 12:30am).
- Unofficially? The deadline is midnight wherever you live. (So you can tell me you live in Hawaii and that’s why your posting so late and I’ll totally believe you./joking)
- Stories will be linked on a Master Links Post from this community to the site where you have posted your story.

But what if I can’t meet the deadline?

If you feel that you need to drop out, you must email me at regala_electra at yahoo dot com before June 9th. No exceptions. It isn’t fair to your recipient and should I need to reassign something, I would want the backup writer to have sufficient time to write the story. Don’t worry if you realize that you won’t be able to participate. You’re welcome to join the ficathon the next time it is opened and there are never any hard feelings.

If you feel that your story will be delayed, you must email me before July 14th. This way I don’t have to put on my scary stompy 4 inch heel boots and come a-knocking at your house, peering down at ya from my 6’3” enhanced height (almost as ginormous as Sam Winchester), and ask you when you think you’re going to post your story. Er, figuratively speaking. And I am really just joking.

No I’m not

I want to know if you believe you’re going to be delayed because I am a geek and I want to make sure my Excel sheet is up to date. If I know who’s going to be delayed prior to July 14th, then things will run a bit smoother and there will be less last minute freaking out on my end.

I will email reminders and continue to post to this community when deadlines are approaching, but please be kind and make sure that you know where you are story-wise. Emailing me or dropping a comment in the community or my livejournal is the best way to reach me, however please be aware that my responses may be delayed as I am unable to respond to emails (and especially lj comments) between 7:15am and 7:00pm Mondays through Fridays. I check my email during my lunch break but that doesn’t mean I can necessarily reply.

FAQ:

Are our assignments super-sekrit?

Yes. You are James Bond. If you spill the beans on who you’re writing for (wow, that sounded a little Jack Bauer, WHO ARE YOU WRITING FOR?), then your mission will be compromised and you’ll be put into an elaborate death machine that moves slowly, giving you just enough time to think of a brilliant escape. And then the villain’s pet T-Rex will eat you unless you kill it with your magical sword.

Okay, maybe you’re Hiro. Yatta! \o/ Use your powers over time and space only for good.

The only people who should be aware of your assignment are you and your betas.

Do I have to write in Neil Gaiman’s style?

Not at all. You’re welcome to experiment with Gaiman’s style but a crossover does not require that you strongly adhere to a stylistic convention. The purpose of this challenge is expanding the horizons of the SPN-verse with the works of the Gaiman ‘verse.

Should I use a beta? Can I show my friendslist the fic under a friendslock before July 21st?

Betas are always strongly encouraged, especially if they are familiar with both mediums of your crossover. You shouldn’t post your story to your friendlist before July 21st. However I’ve used filters for my betas before and that’s perfectly fine.

I have a Supernatural/Gaiman Crossover story already posted. Could I post it here?

Please post a link to the Recs Post, which will be continually updated.

Can I post a story before the ficathon deadline even if it wasn’t my assigned story?

No. Until the ficathon stories go live (July 21st!), this community will not accept crossover fics to be directly posted here. You can post to the Recs Post. The purpose of this community is a fic challenge and will remain so until after all challenge stories have been completed and complied in the Ficathon Master Link Post. I do plan on opening the community later this summer to allow the posting or cross-posting of fic, but the main intent of this community will be fic challenges and/or fic prompts.

Meta posts discussing SPN and the works of Gaiman are welcome as are links to fanmixes and fan art posted elsewhere.

Are you really planning on doing this every year?

With luck and madness, I hope so. We’ll see how it goes.

If I have any more questions?

Please don’t hesitate to ask.

Everyone is welcome to participate. Tell your friends. Your enemies. Your frenemies.

And don’t forget the primary directive. Look after Sam. Crap, that’s Dean’s prime directive. Wait, I got it:

Have fun.
