Word Count: 367
Sam doesn’t understand why Dean won’t get rid of the tape deck in the Impala so Dean always lies about why he won’t a CD player. Sometimes he tells Sam that it’s because he doesn’t want someone punk breaking into the Impala for the CD player. Other times he tells him that he doesn’t have the time to waste on installing one. He never tells him the truth because he doesn’t want his little brother to think less of him.
It’s just that ever since Sam has had his taste of a normal life, he’s become used to being able to purchase a CD that he wants. He doesn’t really understand just how poor Dean truly is nor does Sam understand the shame that Dean feels every time he buys something with a stolen credit card or with money that he scammed off of someone. Sam’s never really known all of the scams that Dean and John have had to run in order to have a place to stay.
Sam was too young before he left for school to understand that during the school year, how hard John worked and how little he actually made. And Sam doesn’t seem to realize that ever since he took off and abandoned Dean, Dean’s never had a normal life. Hours after Sam left them, John packed up the few things that he deemed crucial and took Dean on the road. And from that moment onwards, Dean’s lived, breathed, slept and ate the hunt twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There’s been no real time off for Dean.
And Sam doesn’t understand that every time that Dean uses a fake credit card or scams someone in a bar at the pool table, that Dean feels ashamed for cheating and stealing. It doesn’t matter that it’s the only way that Dean truly knows how to survive; he still feels guilt and shame for having to do it.
Sam doesn’t understand any of it, so Dean lies so his baby brother won’t think any less of him because the only thing that’s worse than Sam’s inability to understand how Dean feels is for Dean to be diminished in his brother’s eyes.
