Posting Guidelines & html how-to help

Confused over the text boxes? Confused over posting and what to post? Or just generally confused over all the <'s? This will explain the basic html coding and what you need to know in order to fill out the text boxes and rec fics.

Here's a breakdown of the text boxes and what you'll see in them.

Some special characters we'll be mentioning are these:

" " quote marks

* asterisk

> greater-than symbol

< less-than symbol

(When posting yourself - please ignore the asterisks * shown below. It's there so I can post the entry and it won't turn into a real link or username.)

Title: <*a href="The link for the story goes here">The title goes here<*/a> <--- this title entry is where you would put the link for a story. The URL goes first, between the quote marks. The title (without quote marks) goes between the greater-than symbol and the less-than symbol.

Author: <*lj user="lj username here"*> <---- if the author is an LJ user, put the user name between the quote marks. Be sure you match their spelling! Delete this part from the comment if the author isn't on LJ.

*or*

Author: <*a href="url of authors profile">author's name<*/a> <---- The second option is for authors not on LJ - maybe they're on ff.net or somewhere else. As with the story entry, the URL goes first, between the quote marks. (This could be the link to the author's list of stories on ff.net or the AO3 link to their stories, or any website that is a master list of their fics.) The author's name is simply the name they use when they post fic, and goes between the greater-than symbol and the less-than symbol (without quote marks). Delete this part if the author is on LJ.

Summary: <--- The summary of course goes here. If there is no summary, just do your best to summarize the fic.

Genre/Pairing: <---- Your genre should go first and should tell everyone if it's SPN or RPF (RPF or RPS - whatever you're comfortable with); and if it contains het, gen, slash, etc. For example: "RPF slash Jared/Jensen", or "SPN slash Sam/Dean, het Sam/Jess" or "SPN slash Sam/Cas". Get it? Put the main pairing in this part if your story is not gen. Also, if the story is RPF/RPS, please add if it's AU or not. Example: RPF AU slash Jared/Jensen/Misha. (If the story is SPN, you don't need to bother calling it AU if it's about two brothers who were raised to be hunters by their dad after their mom was killed by a demon in a nursery fire and the family split up when Sam went to college. If that is contrary to the fic, then call it AU.)

Type of hurt: <---this is for suitable tags for your rec. Under each theme are tag suggestions you might consider. Do the best you can: if you need to call it a new type of hurt (e.g. impaled), go right ahead! The taggers over at Delicious will use this info to decide on the best tags to use there.

Why are you rec'ing this story? <---This is the place to tell us and other readers why you rec'd this particular fic. Maybe it made you cry? Or squee with joy? No matter what, we want to hear your opinion on it :)

Anything else we should know? <---- This is for possible spoilers, warnings or triggery matter, rating... anything someone scanning the comments might want to know, or that we might want to enter in delicious. (For example, does the fic include a link to an eBook or podfic versions?) Anything you want to share is fine!

Example 2: (but remember to ignore the asterisks shown here!)
Title: <*a href="http://ancastar.livejournal.com/82538.html">Redemption<*/a>
Author: <*lj user="ancastar"*>
Summary: It's a different world. Space has been colonized, the wealthy fly to work rather than drive, and slavery is legal. Jared's family has been ripped apart by tragedy. The only way he can save the ones left is to offer himself up as a bondmate. The more he's willing to give, the higher the price he can command. And Jared is willing to give a lot. Jensen is wealthy and heartbroken after the wife he adored walked out on him. He isn't looking for love. All he wants is a relationship he can control. Buying a bondmate seems like the perfect solution. Yet when he purchases Jared's contract, he gets more than he bargained for.
Genre/Pairing: RPS AU slash Jared/Jensen
Type of hurt: slave fic, poisoning

FAQs

Q: There's these weird things with a b in the middle of them. What are they and should I delete them?

A: Don't delete them - those makes the font for the question in bold. Just ignore them and let them be; they'll do all the work for you.

Q: I want to rec a story on sinful desire. What do I do then?

A: The same as you would with ff.net. In between the quote marks goes the story URL and in between the greater-than and less-than symbols (no quote marks) goes the title.

Q: The fic I want to rec isn't on livejournal so how do I make a link to a non-lj username?

A: Easy! Well, not too hard *g*. See example 1. Just use the link coding. In between the quote marks, put the URL to the author's master list of fics. In between the greater-than and less-than symbols (no quote marks) goes the name of the author.

Q: I'm confused on how to get what's in the text boxes to the comment?

A: All you have to do is copy what's in the text boxes and paste it into the comment. Then insert the title info and the author info according to the formatting described here. (Delete the author name part of the text box for the author type you don't need.) Finally, just free-flow text type in the answers to the remaining questions. Don't forget to use [preview] if you want to check it before you post! Still confused? Then let me give you a reference from livejournal management on the matter. For livejournal usernames and livejournal links go here. (LJ has other helpful FAQs as well, if you'd like to look around.) I hope either this post or LJ FAQs can help you with coding. Believe me, once you do it a bit, it'll be a lot easier. And you'll have a new skill you can use all over fandom! Looking forward to your recs!
