Team Sam fic: The Most Important Meal of the Day

Aug 15, 2012 02:08

Jess turned in her sleep, her messy curls falling into her face unheeded, mouth falling open as she began to snore, and drool dribbling down in a thin line onto her pillow.

Sam thought that she never looked lovelier.

She’d been up late studying for her MCAT exam and she finally crawled into bed sometime in the wee hours of the morning after he reminded her that sleep was just as important as cramming if she was to do well on the test that afternoon.

Sam bent down and gave Jess a quick kiss on the head and she didn’t so much as stir. Grinning, he left her to her slumber and quietly snuck off to the kitchen.

Over a week ago Sam had taken his LSAT and he remembered how nervous and anxious he had been in the days leading up to it as he tried to stuff as much information into his brain as possible. And Jess had been so supportive and understanding -- even going so far as to surprise him with breakfast in bed the morning of his exam.

It seemed only fitting that he should return the favor.

Bacon and pancakes couldn’t be that hard to make, right?

OoOoOoOoOo

Jess woke with a start, her heart pounding out of her chest at the loud, screeching noise filling the apartment and echoing off the walls.

She smelled smoke and panic suddenly gripped her tight.

Fire!!!

“Sam!” She called out, ripping the blankets off of her legs and dashing for the bedroom door. The ceiling was lined with smoke and she was ready to make a break for the front door and escape the burning building until the moment she heard loud swearing coming from the kitchen.

She changed course. Sam sounded like he was in trouble and here she was trying to save her own skin? She had to help him - what if he was hurt or trapped in the fire?

Running, she entering the small, galley kitchen area then stopped in her tracks at the sight that greeted her.  Sam had a towel in one hand, desperately slapping at a burning pan.

“Oh my God!” She cried out.

He spun in surprise, accidentally leaving the towel inside of the flames in the pan, “Jess! “ he realized then his mistake as the towel caught fire as well, “Ahhh … shit, shit, shit!”

Jess pointed desperately towards the cabinets, recalling everything she had ever learned about cooking and grease fires, “Baking soda! Top shelf! Dump it on the fire!”

Sam sprang into action and flung open the cabinet.

“Uh .. uh …” flustered, his hands hovered over the contents of the cabinet unsure which box was the baking soda.

“Orange box! Orange Box!” She yelled, practically hopping up and down while holding her hands over her ears as the smoke detector continued to wail.

Sam finally grabbed the right box then emptied it completely into the pan, extinguishing the flames under a mountain of white powder, much of which had missed the pan completely and now coated the stove-top and the floor below.

Sam panted, looking just as shell-shocked as Jess felt.

The smoke detector refused to be ignored however and Jess was anxious to get it turned off, she pushed past Sam and grabbed the broom, meaning to beat the smoke detector until it was quiet, but before she could get a whack in, Sam merely reached up to the the device and pressed the button in the center to turn it off.

Sometimes it was handy having a really tall boyfriend, she thought, seeing how easy is was for him to get the damn thing off when she normally had to smack it repeatedly to make it quiet, but then she turned around and saw the mess that used to be her neat and tidy kitchen

She felt annoyance flare up - it was going to take forever to clean all of this and the stench of smoke and burned meat was making her eyes and nose itchy. She did not need this right now - she had a freaking test she needed to take in a few hours and Sam was trying to set the whole place on fire!

“What the hell, Sam?” She snapped, her ears still ringing from the smoke detector’s alarm. “What were you doing in here, trying to cook the bacon or incinerate it?"

Sam’s shoulders slumped in a defeated posture and sighing heavily, he ran a hand through his shaggy hair, “Christ … I dunno. I just wanted to surprise you.”

“Well … mission accomplished.” She shot back, throwing up her hands.

Fuming, Jess tried to squeeze her way past Sam and around the mess on the floor, but he took her hand, stopping her from walking away, “Jess … I’m really sorry. I never wanted this to happen. Look ... I just wanted to make you some breakfast so you could have a good start to your day before your test. You’ve been working and studying so hard and so worried about this exam, that I guess I just wanted to help you relax a little.” Sam dipped his head, “I guess I screwed that up pretty bad, huh?”

Sam looked up again, his eyebrows raised in such contrition and sincerity that when combined with his apologetic eyes and nearly pouting lips created a face that would have been more fitting on a puppy that had been caught pooping on the floor than with a grown man.

God … does he know what that face does to me?

She sighed. It was nearly impossible to stay mad at him and his intentions had been good, even if his execution was rather … well … disastrous.

“Breakfast in bed, huh?” She asked, feeling her irritation fade.

He rubbed the back of his neck, clearly embarrassed over his non-existent cooking skills, “Yeah … pretty stupid, right?”

“I dunno … it’s kinda sweet.” She stepped in closer to Sam and allowed him to wrap his arms around her, “But how about next time you just make me a bowl of cereal instead.”

“You got it.” Sam chuckled into her hair then kissed the top of her head while squeezing her to his chest, “Forgive me?”

“As soon as you clean all of this up.” She kidded back, her words muffled by his shirt.

Sam pushed her out gently and held her out at arm’s length with a broad smile on his face, “You’re way too awesome you know that? I think I might have kicked my own ass if I had woken up to this.”

“Don’t worry. That cute ass of yours is safe …” She grinned suggestively, “for now, that is,”

Thirty minutes later, Jess stepped out of the bathroom, fresh from her shower and glad to have the smell of charred bacon out of her hair. She was toweling her hair out when she spied the bowl on the nightstand beside her pillow, filled to the brim with Lucky Charms. Sam must have just placed it there minutes ago since the cereal hadn’t had a chance to get soggy yet and next to that was a glass of orange juice along with a note from Sam apologizing all over again.

She realized also that the air had cleared out; the odor of smoke had gone out the open windows, replaced by the scent of Pine Sol and dish soap wafting across the tiny apartment from the kitchen.

Sitting down on the bed, Jess leaned against the headboard and kicked up her heels before reaching for the bowl of cereal. Maybe her morning hadn’t started off perfectly, but she really couldn’t complain and she counted her blessings. First of all, she had a man who would do just about anything to make her happy and second of all, Lucky Charms was her favorite cereal.

Yeah … her life was good.

The End
