Chapter 5

The slow progress and all training with Dean started to take its toll on John. Even if he didn't hunt anything, he had found a part time work at a garage so he did feel like he was neglecting Sammy. He did try to be there for both, but he did feel of how he missed to be two that took care of them.

It was now he started to understand how much he had put on Dean, even if he only was a child too, for taking care of Sammy. He was good to do things, so John just put in more energy to he would managed the situation.

The weeks turned into a pattern; mornings rehabilitation with Dean, lunch and an hour with Sammy, then work a few hours before he was another hour with Dean and finished the evening with Sammy, tv and some different research. He had been lucky that at the hospital was a day care that he could leave Sammy when he worked.

After a strenuous week and John did feel extra weary it went up for him that things at least went in a right direction for Dean. John had come to the physical training and when Dean had noticed him he had started to crawl to him. John had been so stunned that he first just stood there, and first when Dean had pushed on his leg looked down and picked him up.

It also after that went up that even if Dean had to start talking that he did understand things. John search up the doctor to hear what they said about the progress and what they thought would happen in the future.

"As you know brain damaged is a tricky thing. They are hard to predict, how they inflict in a person and how long time it take to get back. For some it seems like most of things come back and for some they do a sort of progress and then it does not go further. At the latest x-ray we did see that the swollen Dean had is gone, but the bleeding and pressure has made damaged. I'm sadly has to say that it looks like Dean will never get back to normal, though of the progress he do have done I believe he has more ability to improve." The doctor told John.

"How much and how long will it take?"

"That I can't say about any of it. I've seen cases that have take years and also a few when things seemed to stop but make a jump forward in only a few weeks. At times it has seems like young people have it easier to heal. You shall not lose your faith yet for Dean."

The doctor seemed too been right. Dean did more noticeable progress the coming weeks. He had gone from crawling to walking, even if looked very wobbly. There had come a few words, but he yet had to put together a sentence. Sammy seemed to like him better, and actually tried to teach him some of their favourite games. It was Sammy that seemed to have more patience than John when things went slow for Dean or when it locked for him.

It was Christmas day and John had got the permission to take Dean a few hours from the hospital. They had been outside a few times before, so the personal thought it wouldn't be any problem. They had been to a playground as Sammy had wanted to swing and go in the slide. Dean seemed to have liked it, but he did tired fast.

Inside John had made sure that Dean could take a nap while he made some food. After that they had eaten and was sitting in the sofa for some Christmas present, John got a good present inform of Dean managed to say a few sentence. When John praised him Dean smiled long and gave them both a hug.

Dean said thank you for the presents he got, and the book Sammy had given Dean was read to both of them.

Chapter 6
1989 - Two years after the accident

John look at his two boy's that sat close together leaning over a book Sammy had brought home from kindergarten. If you didn't know them you would thought that they were the same age. Dean had made a lot of progress, but he had yet to even come up to the level he been when he saved Sammy to be crushed by the gravestone. The brain damaged had also influence little on his growth, so he was smaller than any boy his actually age.

They now lived in a bigger apartment, as John had been able to take Dean home. John had also been able to get up to work fulltime when Sammy had started kindergarten and that Dean went to the special school and daycentre at the rehabilitation. He still needed training and the special school for disabled children lay next door to the hospital.

The doctors had come to the conclusion that Dean would never come up to the normal level and he would always have problem with his motoric, speech and probably would constantly have a need of oversight. Even if it wasn't what John had hoped for he was happy that Dean was alive and had come as far as he did. He knew that things could have been so much worse.

Even if the days had come to a more normal routine for them all had their bad days and John could feel very exhausted. Still during the years that had went he had learned to know a few people and he wasn't as alone. It did help him to manage better, but how good it was he sure had come to always put his boys in the first place. If any of his old friends would have met him they would have noticed the change, though he had not kept up the contact with most of them.

By the years Sammy had growth to learn it was he that had to look after Dean and he had more energy than his brother. He also seemed to have more patience than John had at times, especially those days Dean was tired and he made a mess around him. It also looked like Dean accepted Sammy helping him more than John.

"Dean no!"

John looked over why Sammy raised his voice towards his brother. He saw that Dean had taken hold of the book and it looked like he tried to turn pages, but seemed to crease the pages. Sammy repeated this no and Dean stopped for a moment, but in the next he threw the book away from them.

"What do you think my teacher will say now when you destroy my book?" Sammy accused Dean and went up after the book, trying to smooth the pages out.

"Sammy, come here and I will see if I can help you with the book." John said and hoped that would help his youngest to cool off.

Dean hadn't moved and just sat there, silent. He probably tried to process what had happened. Similar things had occurred before, so Sammy would forgive Dean soon. John worried that there would be a time when Sammy's patience would be worse.

The pages weren't that bad. When they were smoothed John said that they would put some pressure on the book during the night. Sammy accepted that, and then asked if he could get some hot chocolate.

"Let's get to the kitchen and do some I think we all need some."

"I want marshmallows."

"I'm not sure if we have any, but we can see. You can go out first and I'll bring Dean."

John squat down in front of his oldest. His eyes moved and it took awhile before they stopped on John.

"S' mad. Am dumb." Dean said.

"You not dumb. We know it takes time. Sammy will cool down. Do you know let's go to the kitchen and drink hot chocolate."

John rose and stretched out his hands for Dean to get hold of, so it would be easier for him to get up. If he had something to hold on to made it easier and refrain him to fall before he found his balance. As soon Dean was up and was steady he let go of Johns hand and in his own pace went to the kitchen.

Sammy had already started to take things forward to what was needed, of the things he reached. John looked in one of the cupboards and to his youngest delight he did found a few marshmallows. He had to remember to buy new ones next time they went grocery shopping.

He put to cups, waiting for the milk to get warm and then whip some cocoa powder and sugar down. After pour it in the cups he put the same amount marshmallow in them.

Sammy lightens up when he saw what was in his hot chocolate. Dean took his cup in the handle.

"Dean, both hands!" John said knowing what would happen if he didn't.

As soon as Sammy was finished he started to tell about a thing that had happened in school. John listens to him partly when he watched Dean. There where times it seemed like he forget that he was doing one thing and just let go what he was holding.

Dean sat down his cup. Pushed out the chair and rose.

"Thank'u."

"What are you going?" John asked.

Dean looked around, took a side step. He looked at Sam. "B.. bo.. bed."

"Are you tired?"

Dean nodded, and next he put a hand to his left side of the head.

"Have you a headache Dean?" John asked even if just that gesture was as good answer.

"Yes."

John fixed a glass of water and a tablet for Dean and then followed him to bed. Often after Dean had slept it would get better. John had asked about the headache and learned that Dean probably would have them.
