Well, the people who first celebrated it would wear masks so when the spirits came to the living side, they wouldn't attack them, or yeah, possess them. Some people really believe in it, while some others think it's just an old holiday that got turned into a holiday where kids dress up and go door to door asking for candy.

Hm. I'm sure there was some base to it. I suppose the Masquerade Ball would be considered an alteration concept for the holiday?
