[ It's the middle of the night, and someone's not sleeping. But there are light footsteps on the rooftops, and a whisper of black cloth trailing just along the edge of your window as someone's checking up on you. Why tonight? You might have to ask, or guess. ]

[Someone was having a little trouble sleeping tonight. Probably that late night snack she had. Always ends up being a bad idea in the long run. She was sitting up in bed, looking out the window over to the park. Maybe going for a short ride would help?

Whoa, hey! What happened to the view? Who is... THERE IS SOMEONE OUTSIDE HER WINDOW?!]

AHHHHH!!!!

The date?

[She thinks for a moment before it hits her.]

Oh! It's father's day! I... I had totally forgotten.

[Usually her mom or sister has to remind her.]

[ quickly: ] That's all right. It slips the mind easily.

[The kettle beings to whistle and she pulls it from the stove, pouring the water into the cups.]

Were you thinking about your father tonight then?

[ voices nothing, but his expression says it all ]

[Watching his expression become like that creates an odd tightening sensation in her chest. She's never seen him look so dismayed before. Reaching over the counter she takes his hands in her own.]

You won't be stuck here forever. Eventually you'll get to go back home and see your father again. A father who is really lucky to have such a wonderful son like you!

[ a shock like an electric current runs through him at her sudden gesture and kind words -- but rather than be reassured, he can feel his stomach turn leaden in shame and has to look away, his voice just barely more than a whisper ]

You're wrong. If I hadn't been so suspicious, hadn't doubted his intentions... it's my fault he was almost killed in that battle.

[Well... that was certainly not the kind of response she had been expecting. At all. Why was it that things always seemed to get more complicated around Kid? It seemed she had the bad luck of saying the wrong thing every time they spoke.]

Kid... what happened?

[ but Kid has clammed up! apparently he hadn't meant to blurt all that out ]

[She pulls away a little to hand him the tea, trying to think of what to say. This is tricky. Makoto knows nothing about the situation or really anything much of Kids relationship with his father. Cheering him up though... she would really like to accomplish that.]

You love him, right? Your father?

[ Kid accepts the cup of tea, but it almost sloshes when he jerks his head up to answer her question. ]

Of course.

I don't know what happened in this battle, but as kids we'll often mess up and make mistakes. It's part of growing up, or at least that's what I've been told. You're a good person Kid. I'm sure he knows that and that you love him, that you wouldn't want him to get hurt. So, in the end, things should turn out all right between you both.

[ Kid is quiet for a moment, then nods and gives Makoto a very small smile. ]

Yes. You're right.

I miss my parents too. It's kind of funny how you can't wait to be on your own, without them always hassling you... but the moment you are you want them to show up and bother you.

Mine? They're pretty average, really. Dad is a businessman, mom usually stays home to take care of the house... they're great though. When they rag on me about my grades I think they're annoying, but I know they just want me to do well and succeed so I can have a nice life when I'm older. I know they love me a lot and in the end that's what matters the most isn't it?
