Survey: Writers' Songs

Boy, have I been away from livejournal for a long time: 12 weeks.  Just been ungodly busy.

Anyway, I was thinking of putting a CD together for some writer friends of some songs that I felt either were about writing, somehow reflected the struggles writers face, or were just reflective of the writing life.  Despite that I love all kinds of music, ( Read more... )

This is a lot more interesting than grading papers (the stack I have left ought to be measured by the kilo, not the page).

The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" comes immediately to mind.
There are a fair number of songs about song-writing, some of which translate to the writing process in general. Something like the New Riders' "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy," perhaps?

Beyond that... hmmm...

I was thinking along that line, too - Chicago's "25 Or 6 To 4" is a classic song about writer's block. (The title itself refers to the time on the clock - 25 or (2)6 to 4 in the morning. In other words, 3:35am or 3:36am.)

I've received some really good suggestions on the topic from various places. Don't know the New Riders song, but I'll have to check it out. One I thought was genius was Laurie Anderson's "Language is a Virus."
