2005 Year in fandom meme

Tried my hand at vidding with All Starand If I Wrote You.

Writing: "Biceptual", "Chapel of Love", "Octagonal", "Unraveled", "Day of Rest", "Honesty is the Best Policy", "London Bridge is Falling", "Objects at Rest", "In the City of Brotherly Love", "Who's Your Daddy", "Mother Warned Me There'd Be Days Like This", "Fine Spirits". 13,272 words over 12 stories (as compared to 25,115 over 17 stories last year, and 20,348 words over 19 stories in my first year in fandom).

My favorite story this year (of my own): "Chapel of Love." I really did not expect the story to work at all, and then it did, spectacularly well, actually. I'm also quite fond of "Objects at Rest," because I love my team being the dorks that they are.

My best story this year: Hrm. This was not a banner year for the writing. I really think some of the best stuff I've worked on this year is still sitting unfinished on my hard drive. But of what got put online, probably "Chapel of Love" and maybe "Day of Rest."

Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: "Mother Warned Me There'd Be Days Like This." It's not a great fic by any means, but I think as a nice little snapshot of Sam and Jack being friends it's under-rated. There's so little Jack and Sam friendship fic out there, and what of it there is just gets lumped in with the romantic ship fic. Granted, there's the canonical romantic angst, but that's not the whole of their relationship, and in S6 they really and truly were friends. And even into S7, despite all the shippy canonical angst.

Most fun story: Oh the parodies, definitely, "In the City of Brotherly Love" in particular. It was great fun sitting down and contemplating ways I could make that story dirtier. I'm thinking of pulling out all the stops for the eventual OT3 sequel. Because you know Jack got a hold of the security tape of that and watches it. A lot.

Sexiest story: Well, I'm not sure sexiest is the best descriptor, but "In the City of Brotherly Love" was certainly the raunchiest.

Hardest story to write: Well, "Fine Spirits" kicked my ass, but that was largely due to external and situational stuff. I think the winner for the hardest to write story because of the story is "Day of Rest." I had a very specific plan for that story, and it never really got there, and it took forever to get where it did. It did a lot of the things I wanted, but sometimes I still look at that story as a missed opportunity.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? Far less. I'd had this vain hope that once my MA diploma was in hand, the fiction would pour forth from my brain. Not so much. When I sat down and did the word count calculation, I'd written only five fewer stories than last year, but damn near only half as much in word count, which explains why I feel like I did next to nothing.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2005? Well, the one I never would have predicted writing is not yet finished, so of the above, I'm going to go with the Sam/Daniel hot n' dirty sex on the gate ramp. I'd never expected I would write something quite that explicit. Northat it'd be as easy to write as it was.

Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them? This year I continued to branch out from my comfort zone of the shippy fluff n' humor. More gen, more drama, even a touch of slash, and yes, the dirty sex. I learned to be more comfortable with taking risks in writing, I learned that I'm actually pretty versatile when it comes to what I can write and write well.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? Write. Finish the bulk of what's on my WIP list. Continue to experiment and push my limits and my comfort zone. Write something long and plotty. Write more of the one-off ficlets that pop into my head. Try my hand writing in a different fandom. Write a profic. Finish up some of the half-written essays sitting on my hard drive. Just write.
