HAve you read the Alvin Maker series by Orson Scott Card? It's alternative history - sort of. It's set in an alternative American colonies. The first book is called Seventh SOn if you haven't and want to check them out.

Dad's been reading the Harry Turtledove books recently. From what he's been telling me about Return Engagement, sometime previous to the events in this book the South, either through war or diplomacy, became their own country. Now, they're launching an offensive against the North by taking over Ohio to split the nation in half. Weird. :-)
