“I’m not playing any games, Marie!”
The nurse gave Jennifer a look before turning back to the supplies she was doing inventory on. “Of course you’re not.”
Jennifer smiled in satisfaction and turned back to the paperwork that she had been going over.
“However…the fact that your date for that big party that everyone is going to tonight is not the guy you’re mad about…suggests different.”
“Hey! Lorne asked me. What was I supposed to say?”
“Well, I find no works well or how about, gee Lorne, I’d like to go but most of the night I’m going to be thinking about how much I wish you were Ronon.”
“I hate you.”
“You could go alone, Jen. It’s not the fifties anymore. Women have been going to fancy parties alone for years.”
Jennifer looked over at Marie and sighed. “I don’t want to go alone, Marie and I don't want to wait around for Ronon when there is a good chance that he doesn't feel anything for me,” she said sharply “I spent my entire life before Atlantis not going to parties. I want to go with a handsome guy and wear a pretty dress.”
“And make Ronon jealous?”
“Again, I really hate you.”

“Did I say how beautiful you looked?”
Jennifer smiled slightly at her date and nodded. “Yes, Lorne,” she replied “Twice.”
The soldier smiled sheepishly as he held out his arm to escort her to their table. “I’m sorry, Jen,” he said “It’s just been a while since I’ve had a date.”
She patted his arm. “I understand, Lorne. Atlantis doesn’t exactly slow down long enough to date, does it?”
He laughed, relaxing visibly as they reached their table. Her heart sank as she noticed that the same table was already being occupied by one very sullen looking Satedan.
“Hello Ronon,” she said faking a cheerful tone. “Some party.”
“Yeah, some party.”
She looked down when he looked up. Ronon had this way of looking at her that made her feel much like she used to feel when she had to get up in front of class to speak. Also, not looking at him kept her from really looking at him. Some people could hide their attraction to other people but Jennifer Keller was most definitely not one of those people.
“I’ m going to go talk to Sheppard,” said Lorne “You going to be all right here?”
Jennifer nodded and smiled halfheartedly “Of course. “
She watched him leave before looking over at Ronon. Oh, it’s going to be a long night, she thought to herself as she sat down. She rested her hands in the lap of her simple white dress and hoped someone would bring her something strong to drink.
“Some party.”
