My car has been on the fritz for a few weeks now. The week before Christmas the radiator started to do strange things. The heat would stop working and the temperature gage would peg on H. My mechanic put some more coolant in the tank and it seemed to stop. Then the car died on Christmas morning. Same thing, no heat, H on the gauge, lots of steam

I'd be willing to wager that your thermostat has seized. It should be a quick (I've done a couple myself) and hopefully inexpensive fix.
