I've seen a few photos on mule communities of people riding out with a mini kids' saddle that sits behind the main saddle. They look pretty fun, although I'm not sure if I'd ever use one myself! I'd worry about being unable to grab the kid quickly if the horse stumbled or spooked.

So cool to hear how much Samuel likes horses and horse riding. :)

Those seat things terrify me. They are soft, with very little form to them, they are attached to the saddle by just a few straps, and they sit right over the kidneys of the horse. I just imagine everything that can go wrong there and I shudder. We usually ride bareback, and that has been going very well. I just wasn't brave enough to go bareback on our first off-property trail ride. It went perfectly though, so next time I will go bareback with just a pad like you see in that bareback riding photo.
