Title: Of Dragons and Phoenixes
FANFICTION: Super Junior-M
ONE SHOT
Rating: G
Comments: Written for the qmibao weekly challenge, because I was bored at work. It reads like one of those storyteller stories O_o

They were just children, raucous and full of energy, shouting to each other in a mish-mash of Korean and Chinese as they ran around. It mattered not where they went, whether it was to the mystic castle in the clouds or to a bear's abandoned lair, as long as they were together.

Today, it was Zhou Mi who initiated their adventure.

"Yah, Kyuhyun! Let's go find some dragons!" And Kyuhyun rubbed his sleepy eyes awake.

"Dragons? Where?"

Zhou Mi's eyes were bright with excitement as he exclaimed, "the forest!"

As soon as Kyuhyun was hauled from bed, they set about to prepare for today's adventure. Food (consisting of bread and cheese and nuts) was quickly packed and their whittled swords were tied tightly to their waists. They were every inch the little dragon-hunters, ready to find these mystical creatures.

They set off in an explosion of laughter, chasing each other around. They ended up racing towards the forest though, eager to unearth the secrets hiding within the trees. And then soon, the cool canopy air fell around them.

Sticks cracked gracelessly under their inexperienced feet as they slowed to a walk. The immense atmosphere awed them speechless, and their mission quickly lost priority as nature laid the feeling of calmness upon them.

"It's so big, Mi-ge," Kyuhyun murmured with wide eyes. "How can we possibly find the dragons?"

"I don't know," Zhou Mi murmured back, his eyes equally as wide. "It's nice here though. Quiet."

And so they continued to walk, scuffing their feet into the soft ground.

It was the simple things that prompted them to point and whisper, such as large droopy mushrooms or a small nest of baby birds. They stopped to watch a small doe graze in an open field, only leaving when she had finished.

Lunch was eaten on a fallen tree, its trunk wide enough to provide as their table. Squirrels darted back and forth as the boys tossed some nuts onto the ground. A rabbit sat nearby, and after eating they got close enough to pet it, pulling some grass from the ground in an attempt to watch it nibble.

They forgot about the time in their fascination, and darkness soon feel upon the forest. The temperature didn't drop, but this peculiarity wasn't noticed by the preoccupied children.

A howl rang through the air.

Kyuhyun's eyes darted around. He tugged on his friend's sleeve. "Mi-ge, are those dragon sounds?"

"Maybe," Zhou Mi answered hopefully, but he wasn't too sure himself. "I've never heard a dragon before."

And then they stumbled upon a nest.

It wasn't just any nest. It was, truly and really, a dragon's nest, deep within the heart of the forest. And a little dragon slept within the glowing embers.

"Don't get so close, Kyuhyun," Zhou Mi warned in a sharp whisper as he grabbed the collar of his over-eager friend. It was strange how he had only noticed the heat now. "It's already hot enough where we are."

"But Mi-ge! It's a real dragon!"

"You'll get burned if you get too close!" And Zhou Mi forced a disgruntled Kyuhyun to sit with him a good distance away from the nest's centre.

Kyuhyun was in a sour mood. "I thought you wanted to find dragons. Why are we so far away?"

"We shouldn't bother it. It's sleeping."

"So? We don't know when it'll wake up! We should wake it up!"

"Leave it alone, it's only a child!"

"Like us! We should make friends!"

Then the dragon sneezed. Smoke furled from its nose as it blinked with sleepy curiosity at the little humans sitting at the edge of its nest. It gave a snort of smoke in their direction and promptly fell back asleep.

Like children are supposed to, Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi quickly forgot their argument. They sat in quiet awe at the luminous beauty of the sleeping creature. Unbeknownst to them, the mother observed from afar, amused.

The sudden rustling of leaves startled the children. They looked up in fright, only to see a majestic phoenix sweep down into the nest. It nuzzled the dragon awake, who let out a tiny jet of flame in greeting. They seemed to converse for a while, the phoenix only glancing once at the children.

Once finished, the phoenix flew right over the children, slow and graceful.

A single large feather drifted down into their hands.

"Wow, it's so pretty," Kyuhyun said as he peered over Zhou Mi's shoulder. Zhou Mi murmured his agreement, fascinated at what he held.

The feather was warm, shimmering red and orange as if it contained fire within its very fibres. And maybe it did. It was a phoenix feather, after all.

Ah, what an adventure they had today! And such adventures wear children out. So Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi curled up at the edge of the nest and feel asleep basked in warmth, as the feather glowed between them.

They were found like that the next morning, except there was no dragon, there was no nest. Had it all been in their imaginations?

Maybe. But that would be their secret.

Along with the phoenix feather that gave out light in the darkness, secretly stowed in Kyuhyun's shirt.

The feather light.
