[Story Hub] Chapter x00
“Oh jeez…it’s all about to boil over, huh? Great…” Sora curled up a piece of parchment, slightly damp in one corner, and stuffed it into a pocket, turning away from the water and running his hands through his hair. “Well, not like I didn’t know it was coming… Riku!”
He went running - away from the water, the sand, rushing up off the beach in search of his friend. He smiled and waved to Selphie, asking if she’s seen their wayward friend and looked as she pointed out to a distant tree house. “Thanks, Selphie!” he smiled again and continued to run.
The sooner he got this conversation over with, the better.
He didn’t really want to talk at all, actually. It’s not like anyone would know… but he sort of felt like he had to. Silly morals.
He stared up at the tree house and took a breath to relax himself, then proceeded to climb up the rope ladder. At the top he peered into the doorway, saw Riku sitting on the floor, and stepped inside. “Hey, Riku. What’re you up to?”
The sun came in from the windows. Riku smiled into it. “After all this time I’m still not use to doing it: nothing.”
“Ha, yeah! It’s so quiet out here. It’s kind of nice, but I can’t get use to it either.”
“So what’s going on?”
“Going on? Can’t a guy come to hang out with his best friend once and awhile?”
“You look like you were in a rush to get here.”
Sora sighed and leaned against the doorframe. He glanced around the walls, all filled with pictures of the island and all their island friends. Selphie, Tidus, Wakka, Riku, Kairi… himself. He smiled lightly. He would miss this place; he’s had only a year to get comfortable again, a year for them to keep out of trouble - aside from the “occasional” school incidents.
He reached up an arm, hand curving around the air and then after a bright, warm glow, the Kingdom Key filled that air and he clutched to it. Riku stared at him oddly, and a bit worried.
“Don’t tell me you’re looking for a beating?”
Sora chuckled. “Not exactly.” He stared up at the blade, looking through it; seeking its guidance, it’s warmth. And then he let the keyblade vanish again and crossed his arms behind his head. “Um… I’m going to be going away for a bit.”
“Huh?” Riku slowly stood up. “Where are you going?”
“It doesn’t really matter. I just thought I’d tell someone. No one is going to remember me again, either. So you probably won’t even remember you had this conversation, but it is a load off my chest!”
“Sora, what’s going on?”
“The King and I’ve been talking -”
“You’ve been talking to the King and you haven’t told us?”
Sora sighed. He knew this was going to happen… “Well. Yeah. Something bad is going to happen to the worlds we know now and sort of toss us into this other, well, reality. See, the Organization apparently is searching for me and -”
“Sora, the Organization is gone -”
“No, no, different one - and well, I really need to jet before everything happens so the King and I can put our plan into motion, but really, as I said, don’t worry about anything! You won’t even notice anything is going on, most likely. I think. Well, maybe, but everything’s going to be ok! Bye, Riku!” he turned and tried to run.
“Have you told Kairi…?”
Sora paused and didn’t look back. “No. She’ll worry too much… and I can’t do that to her. Even if she’ll forget.”
“Why can’t we help you? You should know by now that we won’t let you do anything without us!”
“It’s not like we have much choice in the matter, Riku… I’m sorry. I really have to go. Everything’s… about to boil over.” He patted the pocket where he knew the recent letter from the King was. “It’s really close to happening, too. I don’t… have time.” He looked over his shoulder and tried to offer Riku a smile. “I’m really sorry.”
“See you around… then?”
“…No. Not really…”
When Riku found his friend again, Sora was standing by the ocean with a clear bottle slipping through his fingertips. Riku quietly stepped forward to hear the other whispering into the air: “I’m sorry, Roxas. Well. Both of you even, if you can hear me. This may get… hectic…”
Sora lifted the bottle and stared through it and then lowered it a bit so he could slip a rolled up piece of paper within it. He fiddled around a pocket and found the cork and placed it in its hole and held the bottle up above him. Riku blinked in surprise, watching the bottle sizzle out of existence with a glow - so that’s how he’s kept his contacting a secret?
“Sora!”
The boy turned, startled, to look back at Riku. He smiled lightly and then gave a small wave. “Bye.”
“Sora - wait!”
“I can’t.”
As Sora said the two words, the sand around him was drawing away from him and his body looked almost as if it was just blowing away, breaking into tiny fragments and disappearing. “Don’t worry,” he whispered, and then he was gone completely.
Riku stared at where he was for a good five minutes, checking over the water, up at the sky.
…
A few moments later as he turned away, he blanked out.
When he finally woke again, he glanced around, mumbling that he hoped no one saw him fainting and took another look around. Funny… he thought he had been looking for someone, but he shrugged it off and continued walking down a lit street.
