And I don't quarry the news looking for these stories, they're only the ones I stumble across because they're so extremely prominent in the news that even a news-avoider like me can't miss them.
I shouldn't laugh, but I couldn't help it at this bit The defendant spent time searching for girlfriends on chatlines, where he made racist remarks and spoke of converting tennis balls into bombs. The prosecution told the court how Lewington had said to one woman that "the only good Paki was a dead Paki". He was a member of the National Front and wanted the Ku Klux Klan brought back, he told women. which basically translates as "Come on ladies, you know you really find psycho nutjobs to be a turn on". How deluded can you get?
I thik his barrister's right, he is a "silly, immature, alcoholic, dysfunctional twit, fantasising to make up for a rather sad life," but I'd say that doesn't make him any less of a danger to others than anyone else carrying around home-made explosives. It just increases his chances of accidentally blowing himself up, rather than it being a deliberate choice to become a suicide bomber.

He'd lived with at least three women (other than his mother) according to the BBC reporting.

I... have a problem with the way people who use terrorist tactics against disprivileged people are almost always framed in media reports as lone nutjobs when, in fact, they're generally part of networks of like-minded people

The "Lone Wolf syndrome" of far right white supremicist is part of a deliberate tactic to avoid associating their PR-unfriendly terror attacks with right wing political parties... ok my google-fu sucks. There is (iirc) an old Orcinus post that quotes a white supremicist leader explicitly saying "if you do one of these terrorist attacks we're saying are neccesary and are caught, do not say anything, and if you must say something tell them you were acting alone" or words to that effect anyway.
Even if I dreamt that quote, here's a few links from orcinus that make the case that even if they are genuinely "lone wolves" that doesn't actually mean much, as far as the culpability of the right wing organisations that turn nutbars like this guy into sharpened and pointy nutbars and then flings them at very specific groups
