Going way way back for me, too, I guess the first time I got into the concept of ships was when I first got hooked on soap operas when I was in high school (the mid 1970's.) I had favorite couples on the shows I watched (Days of Our Lives, Ryan's Hope), but it wasn't until the 80's and I got hooked on General Hospital that I got truly obsessed with a pairing to the point I could have called myself a shipper (if the term had existed back then.)
No, it wasn't Luke & Laura. I was completely wrapped up in Scorpio & Holly from 1983 through 1985. I doubt I've been as emotionally committed to a pairing since. I was not only happy they wrote them off with a happy ending, I think I was relieved. It was demanding too much emotional energy from me. Yes, I'm aware they brought each of them back separately later, but I wasn't watching the show anymore by then (switched over to taping Santa Barbara), so as far as I'm concerned, they're still living happily ever after. So there! :-)

LOL. Works for me!
I gave a good deal of thought to my first ship being a Days of Lives thing. My mom watched, so during the summer at lunchtime it would be on in the background. I know my brother and I followed the show at a very young age. The Bo and Hope saga was HUGE. Granted the present colors the past, but for me, rooting for soap opera couples is like rooting for someone to win a race. It's a thrill when your team "wins" but it's a moment in time thing. It's not fannishly consuming - at least for me.
As I think about it, by the time I was old enough to really appreciate the emotional intensity, I was also fully aware of the soap opera conceits and jaded. :p
And actually I think back in the day I waxed on about both Kitty/Piotr and Dorothy/Scarecrow, so I won't dwell on that but move onto my next day...
