I thought this episode was way tighter than the first one. I know Joss said it took about 6 eps to really find it's feet, but this one definitely will keep me watching.
I'm starting to think that Joss has problems with pilots. He really wants us to understand his new world, to the point where we aren't necessarily drawn into the world. I think I see why he was forced to open Firefly with The Train Job instead of Serenity 1 and 2.
On the plus side, it seems like Fox is giving him more rope with Dollhouse. On the minus side... he might just hang himself with it.
Maybe I'm a conspiricy junkie (way too many years watching X-Files) but I almost wonder if Fox is hoping for a flop that's all Joss's, so they stop looking like the bad guys.
I still hold that Firefly would have made a lot more sense, that we would have been more connected to the characters if they'd started with the pilot ep.
I agree that this was a strong ep - it seemed easier to follow in many ways - but lots of juicy back story informing the real time story.
He was a cocky bastard. I've concluded it wasn't his first hunt - that he actually was a serial killer who hunted women out in the woods. Which would explain the cockiness even in the face of a gun. Not only had he always been successful in the hunt, but needed the increased rush of 'game' that fought back.
Oh yeah - I thought the slightly creepy tone of "I'm not the first girl you've brought to the woods am I?" - "No, but up till now you're the only one who hasn't been a disappointment" was actually an extremely elegant bit of foreshadowing.

He did seem rather overly sure of himself, didn't he?
