Treacherous. That was the only word running endless loops in Kanda's mind as wind howled in his ears, disheveled his hair, ripped in pinpricks of cold against his skin as he tore through the neighborhood. A grey, heartless city with doors that lead to everywhere and no where, computers that sprung to life with blood and sneers that should have been impossible. Abandoned as it was, it wasn't dead. There was a dark pulse underneath the layers of steel and concrete, feeding through invisible veins. Kanda was sure it lead to the staircase. But he had no intention of cracking the "secret" unless it had something to do with getting the hell out of here.

Noble missions of saving everyone were things better left to fairytales that Kanda had never had time for as a child. Fighting for the greater good was like selling yourself out. Useless. Naive. Kanda scowled pointedly through huffs of breath lost to the cold. His eyes zeroed in on the graveyard entrance filling his vision ( ... )

The sound of claws scratching against heavy wood was becoming constant while Rinali closed her eyes and willed herself not to listen. She pulled her knees closer to her chest, pressing her nose softly against the makeshift bandages she had wrapped around her legs after arriving and settling within the dojo the night before. She was fighting back her tears as she searched for something to distract herself from the sound of wolves searching for a way into the dojo, her purple eyes searching the darkness of the room before her before returning them to the floor underneath her feet ( ... )

Half out of instinct was he ready to catch the form of the smaller exorcist, but he straightened with locked shoulders, frowning at the sight of the crying girl. Long hair. This was not how he'd last seen Rinali, even before the Ark. Apprehension threatened him from the edges of his senses, but intuition was quick and accurate in allaying its fears. What looked suspicious didn't feel as such, and Kanda's severity waned in the prescence of Rinali's softhearted smile ( ... )

Just a little more in that last fight and Rinali wouldn't have looked as she did now. She barely escaped the fight with any injuries, but at least she still had her hair and innocence. She may have strained her legs and was unable to use her innocence, but she was sure her legs would recover so she can use them as she did before.

She looked up towards Kanda and blinked when the question was asked, the memory from that fight clearly playing within her mind again as her smile slowly faded, looking towards the floor as she spoke.

"Not yet. In a few days once my legs fully recover from the strain, I should be able to invoke again." She looked up towards Kanda with that apprehensive look that said it was really that bad when she couldn't risk invoking her innocence. She hesitated with what she should say next, wondering if she should give Kanda the details of the fight. It could have been quite visible that her lower lip trembled a bit with words before she spoke, keeping her eyes on the other's face ( ... )

Watching Rinali avert her gaze, Kanda realized knew that look all too well. A grateful and scared look that betrayed spoken words when bodies were close to being broken and Innocence shattered. He was sure that that had been the case when he and his team reached Japan--even Rabi remembered the rest of Team Cross being on the brink of collapse, giant lurching forms of akuma reigning terror down upon already battle worn exorcists. That had been real, because nothing was more real than when Mugen sang for blood in his grasp ( ... )
