"What the--"

Phoenix did not feel well at all. Between a mini-hangover and the fact that it was practically still dark in the room, getting up was really the last thing on his to-do list.

But there was an urgency in Edgeworth's voice... an urgency Phoenix hadn't heard in a long time.

He forced himself to sit up, his head swimming.

"What? What is it?"

Miles narrowed his eyes at the computer on the floor, condemning it to a slow death as if everything was it's fault.

"Get dressed." Miles turned from the room, then paused in the doorway, realizing that he totally blew off Phoenix's question.

Emitting a soft hiss of frustration, he spoke over his shoulder. "It's Ema. She's.. in trouble."

Phoenix was out of bed faster than he thought he could move, quick to get into a change of clothes.

"What the hell do you mean?" he asked, disbelieving. Ema was in trouble? What the hell could have possibly happened?

What if one of those... those things in cloaks had gotten a hold of her, and...

Phoenix felt his stomach turn.

Ema just laid limply on the bed, staring out the window at the dim light that was morning in this hell. Matt, as far as Ema knew, was still asleep. He had thankfully stayed asleep when she snuck out of the bedroom to send out a distress signal.

Mr. Edgeworth and Mr. Wright were both here. The thought was at once comforting and sickening. No one deserved to be in this place, but... the idea that a familiar face that wouldn't turn into another Matt Engarde was comforting. Neither of them would hurt her....

Neither of them would try to rape her.

Ema buried her face into the pillow of the bed. With any luck, Matt would stay asleep. If he woke up and wanted anything... she didn't want to think about it.

Ema managed to get down the stairs, out the door, and three yards away from the tenement before slowing and stopping. What was she doing? There was nowhere to run to--her only allies were inside, face-to-face with Matt Engarde. For her sake.

Panting heavily, Ema tried to calm down and get a hold of herself. She tried to convince herself that there was no shame in running away. It was scientific. Fight or flight instinct. Nothing more.

Deep down, however, Ema knew the real reason. She was a child, useless and helpless. The three years since SL-9 hadn't changed that. The year spent in Europe hadn't changed that. Some scientific investigator she was turning out to be--she couldn't even stomach her own rescue from a would-be rapist.

But, even if she turned around and went back, what could she do? If she could only be usefulA shadow caught her eye ( ... )

Matt knew this feeling. The feeling of being ganged up on. He couldn't say he appreciated it -- but in the end, really, between him, Matt Engarde; and two stuffy lawyer types, who was gonna win?

That was right. Of course it would be him.

First to pay Mr. Wright back. He lashed out, rushing towards him, fist going straight for the man's jaw.

An eye for an eye, Mr. Wright.

Miles glanced back at Phoenix, utterly helpless in his expression. He didn't know. If they ran after Ema, then Matt would get away. But what could they do with Matt anyway? It seemed either way they were screwed, either way Ema was in trouble.

The punch wasn't seen until it struck his rival. Miles hesitated too long. He did nothing and Phoenix got hurt because of it.

"..."

Miles snapped. He charged at Matt, not even aware of what the hell was going on until after hearing the thud, an impact against the wall. He was seeing red at that point. First he hurt Ema, and now Phoenix. When would he stop?

"Damn you." He swore through clenched teeth, hands clenched tight around his collar, intent on cutting off his air supply.

Blood.

There was blood everywhere.

Phoenix cried out, stumbled back, and instinctively covered his face. Where the hell was it all coming from!?

Everything hurt... he could barely see anything... all he could hear was Matt yelling, and then Edgeworth said something...

He stumbled back, fell, and passed out.
