Guilt usually threw Haku off from his usually calm compusture, especially when it concerned the people he cared for. Kakashi's unintentional confession had made him feel like a failure of sorts for even doubting Kakashi's love for him. Wasn't this doubt a heavier crime than Haku trying not to cause Kakashi more trouble and not telling the other what his problem was?
He had been afraid of not being able to give Kakashi what he rightfully deserved, but precisely because he was afraid he wasn't able to actually deliver what he wanted to give to Kakashi: his full trust, devotion, and love. It was a betrayal on his part, which was why Kakashi's words hurt him deeply, like the twisting of a knife that had already pierced through his heart.
Hesitantly, Haku wrapped his arms around Kakashi's waist and buried his head on the other's chest.
"Forgive me," he whispered weakly, squeezing his eyes shut. Kakashi was so warm. So, so warm.
"Whatever for?" Kakashi asked softly while gently stroking the fall of dark silken hair. Sliding his hand down, he cupped Haku's cheek, fingers brushing over the glistening trails of residual tears. Leaning down, he nuzzled and kissed the wetness away, as if he could kiss the sadness away too.
The tender gestures brought more tears to Haku's eyes. Kakashi's calloused fingertips were strong and secure, while the lips were gentle and comforting. These were qualities that he had already craved for so long ago, even back when he was still a naive child who quietly lived day-from-day in a land of perpetual cold.
He always did fail to do some things right. Maybe this was one of those.
"I almost doubted your wish... you," Haku whispered in his shame. "That has never been a good thing and yet you... you're so kind--" He broke off with a sob. "Kind, and warm, and good..."
Kakashi shook his head, brushing off the compliments. Leaning back, he pressed Haku against his chest.
“The only reason I could be warm is because of you.” He whispered. “Someone as scarred, broken and ugly as me could never be warm without someone as soft and gentle as you.” Gently, he lowered his head, capturing Haku’s lips for a soft kiss.
