My first week of classes is over, and I have to say I'm surprised at the simplicity of this quarter so far. I have only three classes that meet on campus, and of those, most of them will end by mid-July and they don't even all meet in class all the time (some weeks I will have online meetings for these classes, others just don't meet at all some ( Read more... )

From the perspective of a housewife. lol justaqt June 25 2010, 01:39:42 UTC
I dunno. I think I'd much rather have a "mother turned teacher" at the helm of one of my children's classes than almost anyone else "turned teacher". She obviously loves kids and would probably have a great deal of patience, which is necessary, I'd imagine. I am a little biased being a mom though. hehe ;)
While it's maybe not as great as having someone whole-heartedly do teaching from the start...
It's smart of her to have some sort of education and strategy should something go wrong in the future. (say her husband gets laid off, or dies/injury, or divorce)
In my opinion -having an education for whatever you'd like to do as a second choice, couldn't hurt!

What would be your second choice if you could never end up working as a teacher?
I think I'd be a pilot.

The problem with her is that she's not even married yet! And who knows if she ever will get married? I don't think she has any kids.

I understand what you're saying, though, and it's true that it's good to plan for whatever may come in case you can't do what you love. I think if teaching here didn't work out I'd probably go abroad and try to teach English abroad, perhaps joining the Peace Corps to do so. If that didn't work out, I might try teaching dance... :)

I have no idea. Just from looking at her I can rule out Amish, since she was wearing a strapless dress... but other than that I can't say.

It's regrettable that one parent can't stay home with children in many cases. I hope your classmate can reconcile herself to the reality of working. She may make an excellent teacher if she loves children, and education is never wasted.

It's nice that your summer is a little less hectic school-wise.

It's true that education is not a waste, I just hope that she truly does end up loving her job and loving working with kids. I doubt she has any kids of her own already, so hopefully she has some experience working with kids to draw on and tell her she wants to be a mom and a teacher.

And I will say it was nice having my mom at home with my sister and me as we were growing up; I won't say that being a housewife isn't a lot of work, because it is, but if your heart lies in one area of work, it doesn't make much sense to go after a "backup plan" that doesn't entirely relate, unless she wants to go into teaching Home Ec or something of that sort, which she does not...
