From highs to lows

This past weekend was amazing. I drove down to Rohnert Park (a city near Santa Rosa) to my friend Spiro's house, and stayed at his place so we could go dancing in San Francisco all weekend. :) On Thursday I went swing dancing, then on Friday I went to a miracle fruit tasting party and then Friday Night Blues... both were amazing! We all have different strengths and weaknesses. I worked in a restaurant kitchen once, and I hated the fast pace, the special orders, and trying to time a whole table of food to come out at the same time. It just wasn't for me. I don't like that kind of stress.

Find yourself a less stressful job you enjoy.

All that dancing sounds like fun!

That's balony. Anyone can be a good barista with good training. If you were making mistakes and being left on your own, that's bad management, not your fault.

Of course I say this as your friend, but I also speak from experience. I've worked at two coffee shops and, yes, it's complicated and can be fast paced and hard, but that just means that people (your manager or trainer) need to stick with you until you've got it down, not dump everything on you and watch you sink or swim.

Sorry that it didn't work out, but don't be hard on yourself! I know you were doing your best and if they weren't training you well enough it's their own dumb fault to lose you.

I agree, I didn't have the best training. She wanted me to be able to be on my own by the end of the week... it is a drive-thru coffee place, so there generally is only one person working in there at a time. Still, though, you are right - I only had a two-hour shift each time I worked, and not a lot of time total to learn what I had to know. If I were more convinced this were a job I really want and can do well without too much stress, I would probably try and tell someone (like the owner) how I feel about my training.

I feel sorry for the next person they try to train!

Yeah... I figure they'll either luck out and find someone who already has experience making drinks, or continue to have difficulty training noobs like me... seems like karma will end up kinda biting them in the ass, really, since I doubt they will get many applicants, being a no-name little drive-thru place. I don't really care much at this point. I just returned the fuchsia shirts I had bought for working in the dessert shop and got $13 back, so yay!
